When I read about the trouble other people have had claiming DLA I realise that we must have been very lucky. My OH was accepted 1st time when he claimed for the mobility component then several years later was accepted the first time he claimed for the care component.

Erm, not sure if I should say this, but my nickname for DLA is "dice benefit".

If you throw good dice, you get it, bad dice you don't.

I've seen too many people who should get DLA (imho) that don't (and a lot that do) and too many people that shouldn't get DLA but do.

I think there'e 2 dice - one of them gives you 1-6 depending on your condition, the other is just thrown. You need 7 to get DLA.

Condition score 1 plus lucky 6 = DLA
Condition score 5 plus unlucky 1 = no DLA

OP: appeal / re-apply, with help if you can get it. Try to be frank and honest about the impact of your condition and the level of discomfort /pain each level of activity will cause you.

i didnt say it was, just seems to be fairly random,i know people who have very little wrong with them get accepted 1st time, yet with my son we had to appeal:confused:

I don't think it is fair to make judgements about other peoples conditions. The fact that an impairment is not obvious to you does not mean there is very little wrong. The truth is you just don't know (unless you have intimate knowledge of the persons concerned). Many people have invisible disabilities e.g. mental health problems. some people seem to think that if someone is not in a wheelchair they are not disabled.

I agree that DLA is not easy to obtain but that shows how very carefully applications are screened. I not only got it first time, I was visited by a Benefits Agency doctor who actually upgraded me to a higher rate than I had claimed.

  • To the OP: One thing you MUST do on this form is tell them the truth about your condition. If you put down you can walk 100 yards because you don't like to think you can only really walk 20, well they'll assume you can walk 100 yards, won't they?

Whatever is the point of minimising your condition? The DWP are not mind readers. They won't know how it affects you unless you tell them.

Gooid luck with your next application.

As healy says, initial claims are not always refused. [YOUR PROOF???]

I am not sure why SCD is suggesting submitting numerous claims at the same time, this is just going to create a lot of confusion.

    dmg24 ........ Did U read the post ............ Think Not.

Nowhere does it say, SUBMIT NUMEROUS CLAIMS .............. AT THE SAME TIME!

Common senses should kick in here and you would only submit a second claim, once the first had been rejected.

Then (possibly) a third, if a second had been rejected ............ etc. The majority of claimants, give up after the first claim due to the length and complexity of the claim forms, hence my pointing out that just because an initial claim is rejected, you should not submit a second, etc....... Many of the people I speak to regarding claiming for benefits, especially DLA are often embarrassed to ask for financial help and when they finally receive back a rejection letter, the wind get knocked out of their sails and they often do not think they are allowed to claim a second time ............ when they ARE. Also if your condition changes, i.e. deteriorates, you can re-claim for a higher level of help if you only get a lower or middle rate one. But then again if your condition improves, you should automatically inform the DWP of this ..................... Of course YOU would do this ...... WOULD U NOT???;)

As to NOT PUTTING DIFFERENT INFORMATION on separate forms .............. I guess your CONDITION, if you suffer from one NEVER CHANGES?

And sorry to blow smoke up healy, I've just checked a few figures of the DLA claims I personally have been involved in (just for this past year 2007/2008 and over 99% WHERE rejected first time round (& NO I did not fill their forms in for them, leading to them being rejected, I only deal with the aftermath of initial claims).

Only TWO claims where not, where the applicant had sound irrefutable medical opinion on their side! And there IS an unwritten policy of rejection and to say NOT is a bit like saying our politicians are ALL trustworthy individuals! (I've yet to meet an underweight, staving, homeless one yet!!!)

So dmg24 ............. RTFP properly before making the wrong assumption!

Always glad to help anyone who asks, except for those EXPERTS with closed ears, wearing blinkers.

    Thank you and good night:cool:

I know of many cases where DLA has been granted first time, people have posted on this thread to prove the point.
