Sending original birth certificate through the post

2 Years ago, just before I retired, I had to show various documents. I took them to the local Social Security Office, where they copied them and then they sent that copy to the appropriate agency FREE OF CHARGE !!!!0

Just a quick plug for the efficiency of the copy service. I sent off for a copy of my son's birth certificate by post on Tuesday, and it has arrived today (Thursday!) I ordered direct from the local Register office not through the national service, it was £7 + SAE instead of £100

I was reluctant to send my BC through the post can`t remember the reason it was needed now -might have been my pension claim because it was round the same time and I was able to take it to my nearest DHSS office where they photocopied it and sent it off for me (I was given a form from whoever wanted it -I just asked for anotherway of sending the dob proof and they sent the form)0

Im sure many people have lost their original birth certs over the years and a certified copy from the GRO will be completely acceptable. You can contact the office local to the event or buy it on line at the GRO online site for £7. Never pay more than £7 some scam sites have similar names and charge up to £50 a cert. (The £10 above would be charged if you do not have the GRO reference - anyone with an ancestry sub can look up the GRO ref for you to save £3 - but if you ring up the local office where the cert was first registered it will cost £7 and you will only have to give the birth details)0

I don't recall either myself or Mrs dzug being asked to send a birth certificate with the application form - only last year.
Has the system changed in the last few months?
I agree with you on this, my hubby applied last year when they sent him the form, no certificate was requested or sent and he got the allowance okay.Luck is believing you’re lucky – Tennessee Williams

If the pension service do not hold a verified date of birth then they will ask for the birth certificate - for those people who don't have to provide it it is because they have already had it verified at some point previously for another benefit and it is already recorded.
You can take a certificate to any DWP office to be verified and recorded in theory however unless they've improved in the last couple of years you may have a fight . We used to regularly receive complaints from people who had gone to the job centre to be told that they didn't know what to do as they didn't take copies of certificates - total rubbish.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

This doesn't allows follow as we have never had any benefits and still no certificate was required or sent.Luck is believing you’re lucky – Tennessee Williams
