    also,

i was thinking rather than using baby wipes that i would be happier to perhaps use face cloths etc that can be washed?? i think baby wipes are v dry anyhow. ????

Face cloths and plain water do the job just as well. In fact in hospital they don't like to see people using baby wipes as newborn skin is so sensitive.

When you get pregnant, get yourself some bump bands in different colours. They're like a wide elasticated panel that you wear over your normal trousers and skirts to hide the fact that your buttons don't do up (and to keep your trousers up!). It also covers the gap where your top doesn't quite fit over your tummy anymore :o Definitely cheaper than maternity clothes. Speaking of maternity clothes, buy them in bundles from eBay.

Don't be sucked into buying special breastfeeding tops- just wear a vest underneath your top so that you can lift up your top and pull down the vest for maximum body coverage while feeding.

A muller yoghurt pot works well as a top and tail bowl when they're tiny as it has the 2 sections.

A breast pump is a good investment as you can freeze expressed milk for ages. I used to freeze it in 2oz ice cubes so I could defrost tiny amounts for mixing with cereal.

    Good luck!

If you're going to use cloth nappies (which I did, home, out, abroad and visiting) .... then ... gawd yes .. use cloth wipes (and even if you're not going to use cloth nappies, though why you wouldn't I dunno) .. then yes, use cloth wipes.

I bought cloth nappies for DD, originally planning on using them at home and despicables when out, but never got around to the despicables. Cloth was well conveneient everywhere ... but I'd never considered cloth wipes .... until I got given free Pampers Sensitive wipes in my hospital Bounty pack .. and my DD's bottom went bright red with an adverse reaction .. rapidly, revised my plan and even now at 4, we use flannels and nothing else.

    Sorry, other things ...

    I found a travel cot essential ....

    1. I had it in the living room during the day when she was ickle

    2. We used it as a "cot" from 2mths when she outgrew her crib (although I was 6mths before I outgrew it!) and hadn't got a cot ...

    3. Then we used it as a playpen in the kitchen for yonks.....

A sling would be cool, keeps bubs close to you but lets you get on with life ....

Good luck with the planning :)

Oh and for sterilising .... I did express with DD ... so she had one bottle each night from DH (gave me some sleep / space) ..... I used a bowl, a plate (to cover the bowl) and a bottle of Milton sterilising fluid .. for doing the breast pump and bottle/teat.

There's a big thread somewhere for having a baby o/s which I'm sure one of the fairies will come and mix this up with :)

Yes, the fruit corner ones. The bowls you get in the shops are huge but newborns are tiny and you don't need much water to wipe them down :-)

Also, sign up for all the freebies going. Join the pampers club, huggies (current freebie is a swimming nappy, towel and bag plus vouchers), Hipp Organic (jar of food, weaning spoon and bib). I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right now!

    Hi pebbles,

This is the thread that someone referred to earlier in the thread:

    Having a baby OS style???

I'll add your thread to that one tomorrow as it helps to keep all the suggestions together.

It might also be worth having a look on the MoneySaving in Marriages, Relationships & Families board where there are many threads on trying for a baby, pregnancy and parenthood.

    Good luck :)

Babies are only as expensive as you want them to be. I've had 6 and I bought less "stuff" with each one.

As other posters have said second hand is fine, either charity shops, ebay or freecycle

I didn't breast feed or use cloth nappies and even then it didn;t cost the earth
How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?

Buy a cheap stick blender and some small tupperware pots.

Whenever you cook a meal that is suitable for a baby, add a few extra ingredients and then puree the leftovers with the blender.

It will cost pennies for say a slice of chicken, a potato, a carrot and a couple of cabbage leaves, but you should get 2-3 baby meals from that. A ready made jar of chicken dinner puree costs around 50p. Plus it gets baby used to eating your diet too, so they grow up to eat a wide range of foods.
Here I go again on my own....
  • www.usednappies.co.uk to buy 2nd hand nappies via auction like on ebay and http://www.clothnappyaddicts.co.uk/forum/ for a helpful forum full of... we... cloth nappy addicts :D

i also 2nd the bundles on ebay. I got 6 baby grows for 10p!!! + postage at cost. Bargain or what!
