  • Was reading on another forum that cloth nappies are now allowed to be sold on ebay because of all the 'going green' stuff. They've got loads on there at the moment.

  • cloth can be sold as long as it is new, if they spot a 2nd hand one or some nasty pasty reports it then its pulled off :(

yeay for the first wrap :) Its all downhill from here haha :) Tots bots r good yeah, no complaints for them myself. i just have the regular ones not the bamboozles. Get a few different types of nappies - have a wee play its fun :) for the runny poo stage id go for a 2 part system myself, shaped nappy and wrap. Once they start on solids pocket nappies are great fun! I love https://www.weenotions.com :)

I've not read all of the posts so i apologise if someone else has mentioned this....don't buy things unless they are really needed...i bought one of those things you put disposable nappies in (you pushed the nappy in and it bagged it for you and was supposed to smell better), it cost about £35 (obviously this was purchased before my money saving ways)...it was the biggest waste of money...why i didn't think to just go and put the nappies straight in the wheelie bin i just don't know!

Anyway, now i'm much more aware of money saving techniques & green issues i'd consider re-useable nappies...they look wonderful these days (DD1 is now 10 yrs and DD2 is now 8 yrs).

NCT nearly new sale! Check them out, we went last week and got some great bargains. You don't have to be a member to go, I think it was a pound to get in, but we saved loads of money on things we would have been buying anyway. I got a Chicco bouncer chair for £5. We checked it was intact and the cover removable for washing. Big bag of clothes for just under £7.

I haven't had my baby yet (5 weeks to go!), but I've had my nappies for a couple of months! I got 24 muslins to use when baby's small, then as boosters later on, and 24 terries. I've got 4 wraps in the small size, but will probably get three when I move up to the next size. Just anticipating messy poos and beginner nappy-folding needing more wraps to keep clean!
Bucket, net for bucket, wet-bag for out and about, flushable liners, nappi-nippas (instead of pins).

We've got two packs of pampers, one to get the free change bag at Boots and one because SIL didn't want them, but this will give us a chance to get used to nappy changes, and have time to practice the real nappy folding etc. without the pressure of having no option in the first week or so. Also meconium doesn't sound fun and I don't want to have to wash it out.

Wilkos have got 5 flannels for 99p, so I've got 20 re-usable wipes.
That's an important thing to remember I think, when buying anything, don't necessarily go for something because it says 'baby' or 'maternity'. In Mothercare it's £2.10 for two 'baby facecloths'. I don't think so.

That's probably a very long rambling post, but I'm 8 months preggers and excited about nappies! :D

Lol, yes nappies are very exciting at the moment. :D Confusing too though!

I was thinking of getting a couple of motherease wraps to use with my terries, as well as some pocket nappies, but one ad i saw for motherease said to use with "shaped" nappies - does this mean they wouldn't go with flat terries?

i was thinking of cloth nappies, i just found a good link to a free pack with all your starter cloth nappies and bits in, it even included a changing bag with special 'sealed' wet nappy compartment too!! my DH;s family do erm... breed quite abit so there'll prob be a fair bit from them too.

Ooh, ooh, do share! Please?! :D Our first is due in 6 weeks and using cloth nappies - I'm determined to spend as little as possible. So far I've got some fantastic wraps and shaped nappies off Freecycle and some terries that worked out at 60p each inc postage from ebay.

I'll be looking out at the second hand nappy links later too - I didn't realise they existed. By the way, our council gives £10 cash back if you send in a receipt for cloth nappies, I think it's fairly country wide so worth looking into.

With other costs, so far we haven't really spent a lot at all, except for the pushchair because I couldn't find this particular one 2nd hand at all :( and a new mattress for the cot and crib. Cot cost £10.50 from ebay and is immaculate. Crib is an heirloom. Loads of stuff from Freecycle, and I've got toys etc that will suit when he becomes a toddler all in waiting. People have already bought lots of stuff and we've been given so many clothes we're telling people to stop before he grows out of them all!

It really hasn't been that expensive at all. The most 'damaging' thing for us financially is the loss of my wage, effectively halving our income. So we need to balance this with becoming as OS as possible so I can stay at home. Don't forget to check out maternity pay and rights, and anything else you're entitled too and make the most of them when the time comes.

    Good luck! :)

    I luuuuvvvvv cloth nappies ........

I use either tots bots bamboozles (have 2) or flat terry squares (14) with a mother-ease wrap over (3). I don't like the velcro ones (mistakenly bought one off ebay) as they can snag up with other washing. I have (20) size two tots bots bamboozles that I plan on using in the next few months as my terry squares were obtained free from freecycle and aren't the most absorbant  .

In terms of putting them on baby, they can be put on in a matter of seconds ....

With regards to washing them, I wash every second night. If they contain poo, I give them a quick rinse off in the toilet (and this gets easier once they are on solids as it then just drops off but newborn BF poo is very liquidy and stains) and then fling them in a bucket (in a nappy net) which has a a tight fitting lid (helps contain smell). The nappies are not soaked, otherwise you would have a terrible mess transferring them to the machine.

For actual washing, I always give a rince wash first, just to get rid of any extras that I didn't get rid of in the toilet first. Then I do the load at either 40 or 60 depending on how dirty they are. I use soad crystals to reduce amount of washing powder needed :money: (and occassionally nappysan) and I use vinegar and drops of teatree oil as a fabric conditioner :money: (which apparently reduceds their absorbancy).

Then I hang them up on a clothes horse to dry :money: (tumble dryer also apparently reduces their absorbancy) overnight. Terry squares are dry by the time we get up in the morning, but the bambooozle shaped nappies take about 18 hours. That is in an unheated / no windows open spare room, so you could dry them quicker if you needed.

Sunlight :money: is also fantastic for getting out stains, but there seems to be a severe shortage of that at the moment :rotfl: .

As I have already said, I love cloth, and now the proud mummy of three children, all cloth-nappied !!! (though the elder two have since learnt how to use the toilet - should do, considering they are 6 and 9 already :rotfl: ).
