I couldn't live without my TV. I can't listen to the radio as I have poor aural comprehension and retention. So I have to see and hear things to follow them... and I still have problems with most films as they are 1.5 hours' long.
I have the TV on about 20 hours/day. It's on quite low, but it's "company" for me as I rarely come into contact with real humans except maybe once a month. I can't hear much that goes on outside, but the small noises that would make me anxious get covered up by the TV.
I love silence. But to sit alone 24/7 in total silence without my "company" would be way too much. And it's nice to see the stuff on the news like floods and storm pictures on the news.0 -
In the 70s when my children were small we did'nt have a TV.I think the eldest was about 8 when we got one. They did'nt seem to miss it.They always read and played loads of games both in and outdoors.Since then we have always had one.I never put the TV on if we have visitors and take last week for instance we did'nt watch it for four days in a row.Sometimes we will put it on just for a specific programme.I would'nt like not to have a TV but I could live without it,but not my radio.I would realy miss that.0

you only need a license if you're using any equipment to watch or record TV while it's being broadcastRe.the licencing people, I thought if you have any equipment which is capable of receiving tv, even if you just have a pc, you have to have a tv licence? (Regardless of whether or not you watch it)
A few years back when we didn't have a telly we found we kept getting letters from tv licencing, asking us to confirm again and again that we had no tv, and threatening us with visits, etc.
from the TVLA website ...
'You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, digital box, DVD or video recorder, PC, laptop or mobile phone to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV.'
you can use your telly for games & DVD, & watch 4OD, BBC iPlayer etc on your pc (like UK Tigerlily above) without the need for one
a few years ago when I was only using my telly for DVDs & games, I reported it to TVLA, they said they'd send someone round to check, but they never did
it does seem to be a bit of a lottery whether they treat you reasonably or not
EDIT ... I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of my cable telly subscription (it came as a package with my broadband) I hardly watch it & most of what I do want to see is available later via my pc, so I could save myself the price of the license
Edit Edit ... I wouldn't be without my telly for DVDs & games though

plus DVD player, plus Freeview box............
I've already re arranged the sitting room, so that the focal point is the fireplace (and not Evil Edna! lol).
Will be saving money on electricity, no more license fee (hoorah!) and no more frantically flicking channels to try and find something to watch other than endless re runs of Grand Designs/Location etc.
Anybody else done this and if so, how did their lives change, what things do you do instead?
We have our plasma mounted on the wall above our beautiful cream marble fireplace:rolleyes:
I think hubby would be up in the dock trying to claim mitigating circumstances or a crime of passion if I sold the TV:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
I lived without a telly for four months when I shared a house years ago. It was great, listening to music, playing chess, talking, generally faffing around.
I'd love to get rid of the TV now, but hubby won't have it, and if I'm honest, I'm the one who watches programmes he watches the football and that's about it.
We've been in this house for nearly six months now, and the living room is very small, and very much TV-oriented, but I spend my days in the back of the house, big kitchen, with the office through an arch, and just have Radio 4 on all day. I'm going to try and keep the living room for the evenings after baby arrives as well, and won't have any other televisions in the house.
I suppose it's a way of forcing myself to limit the amount of TV watched without going all the way of getting rid.

we've not had TV for ~ 16 years; don't miss it, but we're soft enought to be addicted to DVD player on computer for films, & DAB + analogue radio. Licence people don't give us much bother; 1ce a year or so 1 visits - I don't let em in, let em detect the phantom TV!:p0

We don't have one as we simply don't have the time to watch it. We do watch DVDs on a laptop though and play computer games occassionally. Can't say it bothers me that it isn't there. Like the OP, us having a TV doesn't justify the expenditure either.
Have never even had a letter from TV licensing since moving into the new flat last year. Previous house we had one a fortnight, including the threatening ones.:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -
Been telly-less for about four days now and quite honestly, I haven't missed it one bit. Wish I'd done it years ago! My DD1 has two boys (aged 10+11) and they haven't had a telly for about three years. Her house is sooooo chilled out and calm. Just got to sell the Evil One and all the bits that go with it now. Might spend the cash on a week end away somewhere nice (and telly free!) Any suggestions??'The only thing that helps me keep my slender grip on reality is the friendship I have with my collection of singing potatoes'

What are you going to do about TV Licensing insisting on checking that you don't actually have a television every five minutes?0
