I've already re arranged the sitting room, so that the focal point is the fireplace (and not Evil Edna! lol).
Will be saving money on electricity, no more license fee (hoorah!) and no more frantically flicking channels to try and find something to watch other than endless re runs of Grand Designs/Location etc.
Anybody else done this and if so, how did their lives change, what things do you do instead?

we usually have tv free days during the summer holidays - we still watch at night but the kids are told it is broken during the day. We simply get on and do things - fewer arguments about who watches what and the first thing we do in the mornings is throw open the garden doors rather than turn on the telly. last year i got into knitting and sat on the decking with my knitting needles most of the day!
We still allow the kids to watch an occasional dvd if it is raining or whatever but in all the house seemed quieter and calmer - no background noise constantly. We also listened to a lot more music.
Good luck. My suggestion is to get down to the library for loads of books or to find a good hobby.0 -

Hi
Whe I lived in Canada, we moved from Vancouver to a smaller town called Squamish, the house we rented was in the shadow of a huge rock formation. We found out (after we signed a 1 year lease) that there was no possibility of cable or satallite. I must confess that I was actually panicked at the prospect (sad I know). In actual fact it was no problem and we got used to it very quickly. Spent lots of time outside, reading and playing board games.
I do have a TV now though!

I would love to be in your shoes - I do not watch the tv - I listen to the radio, and Iif it wern't for the rest of the family I would get rid of ours!0

I love it, been tv free for about 8 years.
I am not saying that I don't watch TV I do but only when I am at parents house about a once a week.
I have lots of other things to do like reading and cross stitch etc. Found it has enriched my life.
If you have dab radio tune it to BBC 7 brilliant. Get all the old TV shows like Dad's Army, Steptoe and Son.
We watch DVD's through our laptop so we often have a film on saturday night with microwave popcorn :rotfl:
Enjoy your new found freedom.

I've gone through long periods with no telly. We only have one now because my uncle insisted it was cruelty to children not to have one and gave me his old one!
It was great. So much free time. Reading and listening to the radio are actually more enjoyable.
Two downsides I found
1. Not being able to participate in conversations about programmes - Friends and Ally McBeal completely passed me by. although catching up with friends now because it seems always to be on!
2. The licensing people will not believe you don't have a telly and will harrass you!
good luck!0 -
id love to go telly free but i think my hubby and DD would actually lynch me !This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Has anyone told these people it ain't real. Personally never rated them as good TV anyway. Now if it was documentary then maybe yes like the one about storm chasers the other day. I might have a chat about that.

No they don't, I have never had any problems. They called at my flat once, my husband let in him he walked half way up the kitchen and went ok. Turned around and left might have been the killer bunny running around the floor that put him off :rotfl:
When I moved I had a letter and since then one other letter telling me the vans where in the area. And I am like yeah game on :T never called though. I have now been in my new house 3 years so two letters is not what I would harassment. Now if it was harrisment that is blend of Harris tweed and cement (need to be a radio listener to get that one:rotfl:)
I find it very sad that there people out there who lives revolve around TV. Let alone that they need 500+ channels of carp is beyond me. And there lounges/living rooms are set with the sofa and chairs facing a focal point that is the TV.
And then have the cheek to think you are weird for not having one. I mean it is not like I said I don't have toilet or mains water supply.

Why not start having periods with no TV. Like a sunday afternoon while you all listen to the radio and build it up from there.
Husband only misses the TV for F1.

We don't have a TV licence - I haven't had one for 8 years now because I simply don't watch enough programmes to warrant it. We do have a TV though, and a DVD player (which is legal, as long as you're not watching "live" TV). We've removed the ariel etc from our house, and I don't honestly think we're likely to ever reinstate watching.
Instead? We usually watch one "programme" we really want to watch on DVD - so maybe half an hour a night, though some weeks we go completely without. Bloke plays on the Playstation, I read a LOT. In the Summer we take the dogs on long walks in the evening - and we simply don't miss it in the slightest.
If there's something on that we really "need" to watch (Lost!) we visit my Mum and Dad, who have TV, sky etc, and we usually get the added bonus of a free meal too."outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. inside of a dog, it's too dark to read" - Groucho Marx0
