Selling the telly..............

What are you going to do about TV Licensing insisting on checking that you don't actually have a television every five minutes?
Do they, though? And if they do, I've got nothing to hide anyway. They'll soon get fed up and go off and hassle someone else I imagine.'The only thing that helps me keep my slender grip on reality is the friendship I have with my collection of singing potatoes'

I've not owned a TV for the last 2 years. I spend my time listening to music, doing things on the net like MSE, facebook, gambling loopholes and catch up with comedy on youtube and the now defunct TV-links. I watch DVD's occasionally.Happy chappy0

What a great thread -We always said we wouldnt replace ours when it broked and about a week later it just fell through the shelf it was on and hit the floor. Unfortunately we were halfway through a series of Prison Break and were hooked so bought a replacement off Ebay for £10.
I dont think I could get rid of the television but I have been really inspired by some of the comments in this thread and have decided to take a middle line.
I figure I will keep the TV and the DVD player and get rid of Sky and my TV license which will save me £50 a month. I still have the option of watching pre recorded DVDs of all the films I want to see and any decent TV programmes. They are cheap enough on Ebay or at the boot sale and can always be resold once seen.
Its about being selective with what you watch. I have to admit I probably do 20 hours a week and less than 3 hours of that is intentional.
Will call Sky tomorrow

That's it guys, slag off people who do watch TV to make yourselves feel better  it is possible to have your sofa facing the TV without it being the centre of your life, you know.
What like all the people who have a telly think your are freak for not owning one. And knock not owning one or say I couldn't live with out my telly, you would think that it was something like food I had give up. I am not saying that I am holier than anyone because I don't have one I made a choice that works for me. As well as saving a bomb on upgrading tv etc and a buying a licence and no stupid adverts trying to sell me a load of tripe. So for me it is MSE and for me means a better quality of life.
I think you will find that if you asked at work what everyone did they last night I would say 95% would say watched telly. Be it while eating or while in bed etc. But saying that, think more people are becoming addicted to the internet. Again something I could go without if needed. As it is not the centre of my life.
Also I never said I don't watch TV. Said I don't own one.For the record I loved it when I didn't have a TV but reading and newspapers are a lot harder to manage with a small child, reading a paper from cover to cover would be a luxury right now.
I love Friends, and yes, I do know it isn't real  I also love Radio 4, but don't tell me The Archers isn't real
Yes you may know it is not real but people talk about the characters as if they are real and they know them. Also think that sometimes it a gives a very false impression of other peoples lives. And that to me is not healthy. And books and the radio have better pictures LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You maybe able to tell the difference but I believe that there have been cases of actors playing soap characters who are evil. Have been threated and spat on, beat up etc. And even had to leave the country because some of the viewing public can't tell the difference
Now come on we all know the Archers are real you need to go to the naughty corner for that :rotfl:ohhh no in my best Ruth Archer impression.

My dh would love to do this and every now and then does mention it. Maybe one day when our son has left home i might consider it, but removing the tv and sky+ from a teenager?? not likely:rotfl:Murphy's No More Pies Club member # 140 - lost 40 lbs

I grew up without TV in our house (this was in the 1980's) and didn't get a TV until I got married. I always felt I was missing out when I was a child and now I'm a real telly addict! We don't have sky just free view, I probably watch the most tv in our house now! So it's not true to say you don't miss what you've never had, I did. (My parents still don't have a tv or radio).Debtfree JUNE 2008 - Thank you MSE:T0
