What shops are open today?

Does it?
We're nominally a Christian country, but I would wager that there are more practicising worshippers of others faiths in this country than Christianity. Hence those who wish to go to church and spend the day in that way will do so. The vast majority of everyone else is watching the footy, down the pub etc...Thus if retailers chose to open, they will have to pay their staff to come in, at an increased cost to their business. Hence why they don't do it. If people want to shop today, there is nothing stopping them shopping on the web, so it very much is a case of double standards. Personally I don't need to go shopping today; but some people who work 12 hour days and don't have time to shop except perhaps today? The OP is right to ask the question.0 -

I think it means very little to the vast majority of this country. There are around 60m people in this country, only about 3m go to (christian) church -though that's probably an overestimate as the figures are 3 years old.
In the last UK census 1.5m people said they were muslim, 550k said they were hindu, 329k said they were sikh, 260k said they were jewish, 144k said they were buddist.
390,000 people said they were jedi knights, which was lumped in with 9m aethists. From MSE Martin - Some General Tips On Holiday Home Organisations and Sales Meetings

GAME is open 364 days a year (365 this year). God is not part of our vocabulary, and people MUST be able to buy games every day of the year!0

Hkem I'm glad OH didn't know that! He'd have been down buying gears of war for the 360...
Personally I don't have a problem with shops being closed and just having time to chill... But I'm certainly not christian and you won't see me near a church!
But one thing should apply to all on here

Well I need some bread & milk!! Sorry that I didn't plan ahead, but it was the 1st anniversary of my mum's death on Sunday, so a lot on my mind ( see what people mean about not knowing other peoples circumstances )
I also think it's awful that people have to work over holiday periods, though I never used to mind doing it myself for the extra wages.
The thing that winds me up more than anything is how busy the shops are before a bank holiday, like they need to store up a nuclear bunker or something because "some" of the shops will be closed:rotfl: but the I don't know thier circumstances either, thay may just be VERY HUNGRY:eek:Comping again - wins so far : 2 V festival tix, 2 NFL tix, 6 bottles of wine, personalised hand soap, Aussie miracle conditioner

I think when you have been a shop worker you appreciate the fact that shops are not allowed to open on Easter Sun and Xmas. It's the one time of year when we ALL get a break and even though you legally can't be forced to work on a Sunday or bank hol, they are a lot of unscrupulous managers out there who will force shop workers into it!
There are always little shops open for essentials like milk and bread and I'm sure people can survive for 2 days a year without a bit of retail therapy.0
