  • I'm sure this is teaching you to suck eggs for most of you lot. :D

Not necessarily - I've never heard of this soup, but will certainly bear it in mind for the next time we have leftover roast dinner :j

I'll add it to the main soup thread to keep all recipe ideas together.

Roast Dinner Pie is fabulous - used to make it years ago when my kids were young - always went down a treat on a Monday ;).

I want to make my DD(8) Pea and Ham soup for Christmas eve eve, she loves the fresh stuff in tubs. Where can I get a ham hock? All I seem to find are boneless joints. Also, is it best made with dried peas? Thanks

    Hya!

There is a whole thread about pea and ham soup - you should find plenty of inspiration in there :) I've never made pea and ham soup (doesn't seem a big dish in belfast? so am unsure)

I buy my hocks from the butchers but i think some bigger supermarkets do them too. There is a thread about ham hocks too if that helps x

  • Are you still looking for ham hocks triticale? I get small ones from Morrisons on the bacon counter. They are currently about £1.50. Simmer them for an hour or so, allow to cool, then pick away. Quite a bit of fat on them but lots of ham too. And put the stock (any fat skimmed off!) in the soup too!

  • Hello, i hope this is the correct place to ask this question but how on earth do i make soup?
I have said my new year resolution is to cook from scratch alot more and generally eat more healthier.
So today i have bought carrot and butternut squash, beef stock, onion and other various bits, i have no idea how i go about making a soup? I need step by step directions - if anyone is willing to write them down for me, i would be so grateful and thank you xxx
  • I made soup for the first time the other day and it was lovely!! I fried off the onion until soft in a pan, then put in my veg (carrots, courgette, peppers, garlic, leeks and a tin of tomatoes) then I added veg stock and herbs, simmered for about 15 mins and blended.
Mine turned out quite thick and is doubling as pasta sauce

    Hi smarties,

Obviously it will depend on the type of soup I'm making but basically I sweat (gently cook) onion, sometimes potato and the veg in a little butter. Add seasoning, sometimes pulses and some stock and simmer until all the veg/pulses/potatoes are cooked. At this point you can whizz it with a hand blender to make a smooth soup or leave it as it is for a chunkier soup.

This thread has lots of step by step recipes that should help:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

  • Chop any veg you want to use, throw them in a big saucepan with veg stock cube and loads of peper & herbs. Cook till tender, blend, add a squidge of tomato puree and some cheese, blend a bit more and enjoy.
I have just had some soup for my tea using left over veg from xmas day, just heated it up, added water, stock cube, tomato juice (needed using up) and red leceister cheese and it was scrummy:D
Both my kids love Mummy's soup and always play the 'guess what went in to it this time' game while they eat, they don't always get it right!!!!!
