 Sort of like Chilli con Carne, minus the "carne" plus some water and whizzed. And all of the ingredients are OS cupboard regulars. And I've got my new hand blender to play with. It might be fun to temporarily fish out some of the beans, so they don't get whizzed. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

That sounds really lovely and nutritious too. Fizzel81 am sure you could omit the chilli and possibly add some oregano or basil in place of the chilli for flavour for your boys.0

I'm sure it would work without the chilli powder.
To stop it being too bland, you could replace it with a teaspoon of ground cumin: it's used a lot in Tex-Mex cuisine. The Spanish got it from Asia and then took it with them to the New World.
As for herbs, parsley apparently counteracts any possible unfortunate side-effects from the beans, if you know what I mean. You know, like in that scene in Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles"!The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -

I did some of this chilli bean soup for me yesterday and will be cooking up another batch for mum, daughter & me on Saturday. Very tasty, filling, hearty and healthy. I left some of the beans whole and added 1 teaspoon of cumin to round off the chilli. I will "whizz" in a small bunch of parsley on Saturday. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

This one's lovely (but not so cheap!)
1 mango chopped
1 head of broccoli broken into florets
1 onion chopped
1 small cube of grated ginger
1 heaped tablespoon (or more if you like) green thai curry paste
Heat a bit of oil, add everything and stir it all round in a large pan and sweat it for about five mins to cook off the spices a bit, add 800mls stock and then 20 mins later whizz it up with a stick blender. You can swirl in cream or something before serving but I like it just how it is.
Looking forward to trying the chilli bean one!0 -
I had the top of a celery and decided to make soup. I put the chopped celery - inc leaves - 2 medium chopped potatoes - with skin - and 2 medium chopped onions.
I simmered it till soft - about 30 mins, tasted and seasoned it. I then blitzed it and thickened it with a desertspoon of cornflour and a cup of milk.
It was very good.
I agree with the sweating veg in butter/oil first, but at the mo I'm on a health kick.
p.s. thriftlady, how is your French going?0 -
Hi, I have three packs of celery to use up. I was thinking of making a soup. Does anyone have a healthy recipe? I have a slow cooker?0
