My most humiliating moment as a housewife was when I was called home from work one day because our burglar alarm was going off. We couldn't find anything wrong and eventually had to call in a service engineer. He found a huge cobweb woven around the passive ray in the lounge and an even bigger spider comfortably tucked up behind it. Apparently the spider had been coming out to play and the passive ray was sensitive enough to have been triggered by his movements.:rotfl:

I have just spent the last 2 days reading the whole of this thread. (I'm ill with my second bout of tonsillitis in 2 weeks so have had plenty of time!) and even though it has been extrutiatingly painful, i have laughed so much!

I decided that since i have laughed so hard at other people, that it only fair I post myself.

Firstly, my fruit bowl. Contents of! Voucher for Homebase, arrived this morning, appt for sons parents evening, paper with measurements on it for a raised bed for the garden, a form for my next blood donor session, 1 green glove, 1 black glove, 2 mcdonalds toys, some scooby stickers, a key ring, a business card for a lim (my daughters prom this year), an adaptor (for what i dont know!!) a measuring tape, a pair of sppiderman sunglasses, a lego creations box, an invitation, a hair clip, 2 pens, football subs reminder, green plastic gun and millions of bl**dy yellow balls for it!, stanley knife, toothbrush ?????, paracetamol, necklace, 4 targets for the previously mentioned gun and finally, 5 apples!! Yes I have fruit in my fruit bowl.

The garage and floor of the hall upstairs are covered in about 10 loads of washing, i have just thrown away a bag of salad and a bag of carrots, i cant remember the last time i polished and I dont iron (OH does!)

Phew i think thats enough for now.

If i can summon up some energy from somewhere, I might put some washing in!

"I thought I had better replace the light bulb in the bedroom which had blown about 2 and a half years ago."

Just a quick aside re my post about the light bulb. When the survey was done for the HIP energy thingy, they put down that the bedroom light was "non energy saving bulb" - I pointed out that as it hadn't worked for a couple of years that it was the most energy saving bulb of all!:rotfl:

Great comment and what a stupid thing to put on a survey if the new buyer wanted to change it they could.

Upstairs looking lovely after I spent all of Friday doing it - shame the builder is knocking a hole in DS3's bedroom wall next week, I won't be doing anything else up there until after that.

Well the builders have finished at last. Double glazed through-out, and its already warmer even in the office but dust and muck everywhere and won't be able to find things till Christmas. thrown a casserole in the slow cooker and am going to put my feet up with a cup of tea - it will all still be there tomorrow.

the alarm was going off next door intermitantly when our nieghbour was away and we were looking after the house - after 10 visits to reset the alarm in 48 hours we called our neighbour who aranged for the engineer to come round the next day - spider and web was the problem - as the engineer knew to knock on our door, he knew i was not the home owner - but i felt her shame!! i did dust the senser - but only to get some peace for us and other nieghbours!!

    Hi all :)

I do love the OS way but sometimes I find i'm out of the loop as I live in a flat (luckily with a private garden) and don't really dream of having a small holding. I am a gadget freak and am not very flylady :D

I love to keep my lights on as I like the light (I know I know....) and love hot baths rather than showers and will put the heating on for hours in the right mood.

So i'm changing the OS into ONS...lol Old New Style. Anyone else in this position? Here is my list of my OS and not so OS ways:

    1. Getting the garden in a fit enough state to sustain at least the expensive part of my veg shopping list- Lettuce, spinach, leeks etc
    2. Charity shop hunting for all things cool
    3. Bread making by my bread maker, but sometimes yearning for cotton wool bread
    4. Using freecycle to bin my consumerist garbage
    5. Using freecycle to pick up some handy stuff i think i need......
    6. Growing lettuce spinach and courgettes on my windowsill even though they should be outside
    7. Using taxis way more than I should
    8. Getting a takeaway when I can't be bothered to cook
    9. Buying a readymeal when i'm in the supermarket as it looks nice on the packet
10.Trying to clean my house with lemon and brill cream or whatever then giving up and using Cif
    11. Making washing powder... then realising i like the smell of surf

Ok... so what was the point of this post....? Basically I am saying sometimes i read posts on here and people say OH NO! I'm no way near
OS cos i do X Y or Z and I say... Aaah well it's not worth the grey hair! I will update this to let you know how I do....not good at the mo but trying!

Enjoy OS but just do it the way it suits you. Anyone else got any confessions lol

I like to buy 2nd hand books, clothes etc wherever I can, but I dont re-cycle (no facilities within easy distance) or compost (no garden!); I love charity shops and my local freecycle though

I often cook from scratch but I love Schwartz casserole mixes and always have several in the cupboard

I use sauce mixes too :p

I don't see OS as any sort of competition and there are plenty of things I read on here that just don't appeal or suit my circumstances for one reason or another

Take what you can use and let the rest go by ;)

I'm retired by the way, so no rushing home after a high powered job or tiring commute :)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

    Hi wssla,

I couldn't agree more! :T Old Style is not a punishment, nor is it a competition...it's a lifestyle choice, and the sensible way to go about it is to pick and choose what suits you, your family, your purse and your individual circumstances. :)

There will always be things that some of us think is a step too far, and what is 'normal' to one person can often seem a bit 'extreme' to another, so do what suits you and don't feel pressurised into doing anything that you feel uncomfortable with....remember nothing is written in stone. ;)

To see other Old Styler's 'confessions', have a look at these threads:

What's your non OS guilty secret?

    Money Saving gone TOO far?

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the replies together.

None of your 'confessions' look that bad to me, probably because they do look somewhat familiar! :o I agree with Pink-winged, though - one of the best things about OS is that you can do as much or as little as suits you.

The only thing I ever really feel guilty about is having the heating on more than necessary - I'm rather into environmental causes and I know using lots of gas heating isn't good. I feel the cold more than anyone I know, though, and I sometimes reach a point where I just decide that life's too short to be unable to feel my fingers while in my own home! smiley-gen125.gif
