Yep I know what you mean, i have my very ltd powers. A friend of mine who teaches in Manchester had to go through a police interview and a teaching council interview, all because she kept a group of children back at the end of the day for a telling off-She was accused of pushing them and one little delight reported it to the head and that was the end result. she was cleared by the way and the interesting fact which emerged was that the same child had done the same thing to over three teachers!! Makes you wonder doesn't it? She is completely sickened by the lack of support given.

Well that particular case is a symptom of the legal system's cowardice with dealing with children.

One case of "wasting police time", a fine the parents have to pay, and one ebayed Xbox later, leaves a child understanding the value of the truth.
I don't know what else i want to do, it is all i ever wanted to be- so will have a look around.

There's adult education - whether it is the the R's, or something more specialised.

Also depending on the area of the country, there may be private tutition.

Bob forgive me if you already know this but do you know any of the life-coaching techniques to try to discover what you might like to do ? To ask yourself things like 'What would I do with my time if I didn't have to work for a living ?' Or 'What hobbies would I pursue if I was in prison ?' In other words to try and find what you are really interested in & and take it from there. HTH XX El

If you really like the teaching, why don't you try telling the agency that if they send you into another sink school, you're going to leave.

wow, skint - your schools are back Tuesday??? Ours only broke up on Thursday!!

Bob- are there any private schools you can work at doing supply? My ex is a teacher at a private school and whilst they are not angels, there are not the problems some of the state schools seem to have. If you are state school qualified you can work in a private school, although bizarrely, if you have only worked in a private school, you can't then teach in a state school unless you go back to your probation year!!

  • Thanks for all the advice-
Ell- Yes i have thought about life coaching techniques.
Z-thanks and we all said the same to my friend, and also i have thought along adult ed lines as well. Private tuition is a patchy area- I don't have the room myself at the moment, but have looked at montessori and the like.
I have told the agency this in the past and to be honest they have been receptive to suggestion- unfortunately you takes your choice. I suppose I used to be of the opinion that there is no such thing a sink school and that every child has the right to be taught if given the right parameters to work in. If only the children knew this!
Skint- We have only got Easter break off, they are back after monday and break up in two weeks time, but i only work on a part time basis so have and will think more on it.

something to consider Bob - the job i've just started is in the Ad. Ed. Centre and most of the managers were teachers in a previous life - maybe a move into education management might be something to consider?

Thankyou, I did have my name down at a small private school- i am state qualified and have often worked in mixed settings. I will give them a ring to see if i need to update things. I had forgotten about the other way round with private schools- odd isn't it? As standards are very high at private schools, and everyone has to undergo OFSTED, but i think its linked to PD-not that PD is all its cracked up to be, it's mostly about the grub and the venue-not the training:rotfl: Ooops shouldn't have knocked our wonderful system.

It is a move i have considered, as i would like to teach my own degree subject of English lit- It's weird what you miss. I love reading, and miss talking about the subject. The course i am on at the moment has a module in it which would link to that so i will explore further.
How is the job going by the way? Have your nerves disappeared yet?

My nerves do seem to have gone and although there is tonnes to learn about it all (sooo many procedures and processes for all the differen 'arms' of Ad. Ed!) I do feel I'm settling in well and so far haven't had any thoughts of being overhwlemed by anything - although I did have a bizarre mix of dreams last night about being in a new job (not the one I'm in) and then a dream about 'that' woman so I guess my brain is sorting it all out!

I'm going to an information session on 1 April for the C+G teaching course that starts on 15 April. Nice coincidence that I'm now sharing an office with the manager of the teaching courses- I told her I'd like to teach cooking and 5 minutes later someone came in to make sure I was on the list for the session!! I've already got my application form in, so fingers crossed I should be starting the course next month.
