Update on the Somerfield/Macmillan bags. The sign says Suggested donation £1 so I guess you get one if you donate at least £1.

Of course, yours truly got so exited about finding out the correct price he forgot to buy one!

Wilkinsons do a quite smart fold up/popper fastening bag for 49p, material, and long handles so can carry over one shoulder. Small enough to keep in a handbag too.

    Thanks, that sounds good.

I only go into Wilkinsons about once a month as its a £5.50 bus trip into the city for me. I will look out for them next time I go as I do need one.

I only have a little ruck sack, which normally does me as I shop little and often. But sometimes I get tempted by a special offer on a 24 pack of lager, which fills my ruck sack, so I have to use carrier bags for the luxuries like milk, bread and spuds

My son was in Tesco yesterday and as all he bought was a small piece of steak (that cost a grand total of about £2) & he lives just across the road he didn't bother getting a carrier bag. As he walked out of the shop a security guard stopped him to check that he'd paid for it & wasn't shoplifting! My son had gone through the self-serve till and fool that he was hadn't picked the receipt up  so they had to go over to the till and check that he had actually bought & paid for it. When he asked the security guard why he'd been stopped he was told it was because he was just carrying his steak and it wasn't in a carrier bag! This just seems daft to me, if that's the case someone could just shoplift and put it in a carrier & they won't be stopped!

I suppose if nothing else it's taught my son that he must ALWAYS get his receipt :D but as he says even with a receipt he would have been stopped, it was the lack of carrier bag that made the security guard stop him.

i was told the same at Xmas...we need to put it in our bags:confused:
surely if you have bought something and have the receipt nobody should question this?
This was in a shop where they had all these signs bumming on about the environment and waste reduction
I think its seen as all good advertising to the shops involved in this madness and surely its this type of behaviour that the government should target

I was in Tesco's on monday and at the checkout realised that I had left my reusables in the car... so I put everything into the trolley... said to the cashier that I had about 3 large bags worth (for my points ;) ) and that I had left my bags in the car... I walked out of tesco's past 2 security guards... and they didn't bat an eyelid!

I seem to frequently P*** off checkout people by refusing bags. They have already pulled loads of them off the rail thingy by the time I'm at the till and it seems to really annoy them that I don't want them.
One time when I said I had my own bags the woman quite obviously muttered '****'s sake' under her breath! I really should have contacted the manager about that one.
    I don't understand why they're so bothered.
Supermarkets are one thing but the message def hasn't penetrated to clothes shops and the like. I've had utter incomprhension from TKMaxx and Next when I've tried to get away without a bag.

I am more likely to accept them when clothes shopping, not that I do a lot of that, but it does make sure the clothes stay clean and dry until you get them home, in case you change your mind. Plus if I was taking something back, say, to M&S, I'd always want to do so in an M&S bag - is that just me?

Obviously I do try to keep my bags clean, and wash them when necessary, but my 'regular' bag has such a variety of 'stuff' in and out of it that I can't be sure clothes would stay pristine.

I went into town yesterday, a 15 mile bus ride. Accidentally found found a Primark store which I didn't know existed. So I went in to "see what all the fuss was about". Came out with 4 shirts, a sweat shirt, 2 polo shirts and 2 tee-shirts in a large brown paper "carrier" bag.

Carried it round for about two hours then a 40 minute bus journey home, and it was fine. But when I got home and was putting my bags down I let go of one of the handles on the Primark Bag. The bag ripped right down the side and the clothes fell out. Two handles were strong enough to hold the weight, but obviously not one!

I would have been annoyed if it had happened in town! Planning on going back next weekend, but won't be using one of their paper bags this time.

Long time since I've been to Primark, didn't realise they were now doing paper carriers!

It's obvious that stores still have a long way to go to reduce the amount of carrier bags that are being wasted everyday!

I keep a few folded carriers in my handbag and have no problem telling assistants that I have my own bag, and I've had no bad comments from anyone so far. My husband always thinks the shops will complain if I'm using a competitor's bag in their store, but none have.
