Has anyone had any problems refusing a carrier bag.

I bought my son a gym bag for his pe kit the other day at a large sports store. After I'd paid for it, I folded it and put it in my large shoulder bag. The sales assistant told me she needed to put it into one of their bags. I refused saying I didn't wish for another carrier bag. She then asked me why. . Completely dumbstruck that she needed to ask I just answered I would be taking yet another bag that would end up bwing recycled, the sports bag, fitted into my shoulder bag and I had the receipt in my hand should anyone query it. The sales assistant then dismissed me by flicking the back of her hand and saying fine, go.

I'm only just getting into the habit of refusing carriers and re-using myown bags and it was the first time anything like this has happened.

surely if you have bought something and have the receipt nobody should question this?
This was in a shop where they had all these signs bumming on about the environment and waste reduction

For a lot of shops a carrier bag isn't something you carry your goods home in, it's an advertisement for the shop.

The staff are trained to give you a carrier bag as it advertises the shop.

Load of twaddle, shops don't have a problem putting goods in one of their carrier bags when they don't have one big enough !

What are we women or wimps? Refuse and walk out, we're hardly going to be nicked for shoplifting whilst clutching the receipt in our hot little hand are we ?

Let's stick up for the planet and shove two fingers up to snippy shop assistants.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

That would only work if they had a guard on the door stopping people who were carrying stuff out not in a carrier bag.

Not that it would work as the shop lifters would take an empty one in with them and fill it up. "Hey, it's in one of your carrier bags, and that proof of purchase"

I've seen a few "security guards" stop people and ask if they had a receipt for the goods they were taking out of the shop, but never one asking if they had a carrier bag!

You could always allow the assistant to put the item(s) in a carrier bag and hand them over to you. Then you take them out of the carrier bag and hand the carrier bag back. The assistant has done his/her job by giving you the goods in a carrier bag, and you have returned the bag for reuse.

Just remember to take the receipt too if the assistant placed it in the bag.

I always refuse carrier bags, unless I really need one. I have never had any problems.............I can be fairly assertive though!!lol

the only problem I've had is with me saying "I don't need a bag thank you", but the assistant is on auto-pilot and still starts to use one. That and forgetting to say "I don't need a bag thank you", but no-one's perfect!

I was stopped by security at Asda not long after they opened, because I was using my own bags.

It will change, given time ... one of our local charity shops is now charging 2p for a bag!
