halifax stole my savings!!!!!

Hello,I have been with halifax plc for 16 years and never defaulted on payments or had any bank charges against me.
In dec 2007 I rang them and asked if I could have a holiday break from my loan payment of £293.00 and was told YES.!!!
I then lost my job so rang them and they said that I shouldnt have been told that I could have a break and I was now in arrears but if I paid 2 payments of £180.00 then they would reschedule my repayments.I paid these 2 payments out of my savings which I also had to use to pay my rent, gas and electric.I then rang them after the 2 payments and was told that it had to be 3 payments and I wasnt guaranteed a reschedule. Then before I could make that 3rd payment they took all my savings from my websaver account (£699.19) and left me with nothing to live on.I contacted them again and they reluctantly agreed to give me back £200.00, But when I went into my online banking they had taken another £699.19 and made me overdrawn. This will make me have bank charges and also affect my credit rating.
As I see it, this is all down to them giving me the wrong information back in dec last year.I will be starting work on tues but will not get paid till the end of may so will not be able to make any payments till then and I have no money to live on or get fuel to travel to work, which may mean I will lose that job!!!
Is there anything I can do to resolve this matter.
Your help would be very much appreciated.
thank you,
Carol

write everything down and then make an appointment to see your bank manager at your local branch.
do not leave until it's sorted - i think what they have done is shocking. i don't know whether they can take your money like that if they think you 'owe them. but, as you say, you were given the wrong info in the first place.0 -
thanks for replying. I have already been in to the bank and seen the manager, this is how they agreed to give me back £200.00 of my own money!!but then still cocked it up.I am going to ring them again today and threaten them with bankruptcy, good idea?0

I would suggest another appointment with the manager, and explain that although you thought it was sorted, there was still another '!!!! up' and ask what he / she the manager is going to do to put it right and offer you in compensation for all the extra stress you have had because of their error.
And put everything in writing to them, get names of the people you spoke to on the phone.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

yes i know they can take the money as I have sadly found out now but they said they rang my home phone number, I dont have a landline!!! so I was never given the chance to rectify the situation before they took the money.and they took it twice!!!! should I threaten bankruptcy?0
-
if they have taken money twice from a savings account it will not incur any charges, missed direct debits etc because you shouldn't be able to have these set up on a savings account.
They have applied the right of set off to your accounts, which simply means that they have the right to take money from any of your accounts to repay any outstanding debts you have owing.
They have made a mistake by debiting the funds twice. If you speak to them calmly about this and ask them to look they should be able to rectify this mistake for you.
In terms of bankruptcy, I don't know that threatening this will make any difference at this stage.
If you feel that financially you are in the position where bankruptcy is your only option, make sure you have obtained advice from the likes of Citizens Advice or similar.0 -
i have just tried phoning them but they are closed until after the bank holiday, meanwhile I have no money!!!! also I have applied with cccs for help0

that's not so good. However, I've just checked another thread (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=809181)
It appears to state that the actual branches are open today. Are you able to visit your local branch today? If so, please do this and ask to speak to the manager or person in charge. They should be able to sort out the additional debit in some way today.
To find out if your branch is open, use this to find the branch and then call them and ask
