I can see Northern Rock's reasoning.

They want to discourage people from closing accounts on the Friday only to open another account on the Monday, in order to take advantage of an 'introductory' bonus rate. That scenario is far-fetched but you can see the point I'm taking, can't you? Carpet-baggng, interest-chasing, savvy savers would just open an account for 12 months, close it and then open another one with an introductory bonus and repeat the process - with all the administrative headaches and paperwork!

New customer, to me, means someone who has never had an account with them before.
  • Yes I can also understand their reasoning . That's what I thought when I opened the account . The terms were to stop a "customer" coming to the end of a bonus period from trying to grab a new bonus .

"New customer, to me, means someone who has never had an account with them before."

    Yep , I can see that .
Yet they didn't/don't use the words "New customer" in the contract .

  • What I find particularly insulting is that the only letter I've failed to receive from a British banking institution in over 30 years (out of the 45 accounts I've had over that period) , is allegedly sent after they have my initial deposit , the day before they go to the BofE because they're skint and 2 days before the first run on a UK bank in over 100 years .

And the letter says I won't be receiving a bonus .

    What a strange co-incidence .

Almost , dare I say it , as if the letter was never posted .
  • Whatever the reason is that you haven't had the letter, have you asked for a copy?
