You should get a letter asking for your P60 and P11D.

P60's are due end of May
P11D's are due 1st week in July.

So you have a wait i'm afraid

I still haven't recieved any information from the tax office as of yet, i've recieved my P60, do i send that to them or do they have a copy of it?
but, again, do i recieve a cheque or a better tax code?
  • I sent in my P87 for 2007 at the beginning of March, with no P60 or any other documentation, as the form states this is not required at that time. At the beginning of May, I received a response asking me for details of a typical month's business travel, including dates, companies visited, location etc.

I don't 'do' typical travel, just adhoc, so I sent in a detailed response, containing all the info I could provide, as I didn't want to give them an excuse to delay providing a refund. The info I used was:

    Date dd/mm/yy: Business Reason.
    Client: xxx
    Place: xxx
Travel from xxx to xxx return.
    Total Mileage: xxx miles.
    Car: xxx Petrol. Reg: xxx.
    Company : £x.xx per mile.
    Company payment: £xx.xx.

This seemed to work as I received my refund cheque at the beginning of June. Unfortunately not as much as I was hoping for, as apparently my company has slightly underpaid my tax for that year - due to benefits in kind - but still very welcome.

However next time I am going to take a punt and send in this information with the P87. They may bin it and ask for it again, but on the other hand, they may choose to use it and I may get the refund chq even earlier.

Note: They didn't ask me for my P60 or anything else, just a breakdown of my travel expenses.

If the car allowance is taxed along with your normal salary, then yes you are.
Everyone seems to be very obessed with forms - there is nothing to stop you making your claim on a piec e of ordinary paper, as long as your claim is clear and it is accompanied by a covering letter.
£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths

Unless it gets dealt with by a jobsworth at the HMRC office who write back enclosing a P87 and telling you to complete it! (As happens far too frequently!) It's better just to complete the damn thing in the first place than waste months of your life arguing with an HMRC jobsworth that they have no actually legal requirement for a P87 to be completed!
  • Hello folks

I use my own vehicle for work. They pay me 40p for first 10,000 miles and 25p thereafter. I have been advised that I can use the p87 form to claim Tax relief on the difference between 25p and 40p. Does anyone know if this is valid as I currently do around 35,000 miles a year and have been told I can reclaim up to 6 years in arrears. Could be a lovely Xmas present if this is true?
PS Brand new to this site so hoping I have used correct forum etc

No you cannot claim the difference of 15p for miles over 10000, as the maximum amount the tax office will allow you to have as tax free is 40p for the first 10000 miles and 25p for miles in excess of 10000.

    Hi all

I have just heard about this and think its fantastic news however i am very sceptical and sounds to good to be true also i dont fully understand it.

I travel 87 miles to work and 87 miles back home every day (174miles round trip) i work 4 days on and then get 4 rest days and so on. I have my own car but dont get paid any allowance from my company. am i right in thinking that because i travel 32,364 miles a year i can claim 10,000 miles @ 0.40p = £4000 and then 22,364 miles @ 0.25p = £5,591 which is a massive amount.. How much will i receive because i have read a couple of differant things, something about my tax (which is 20%) do i get 20% of £9591?

Any response would be amazing cheers
