as long as you remember to be nice to the littler people as you pass by, you know the cleaners, bin men, the shop workers, nurses, teachers all of whom are on a lower than 'average' wage of 25,000/ a year. :p

I'm the sort of person who isn't bothered about money as long as I can live.

I don't have any debt of any kind - if I'd gone to university I'd be in debt even if I wasn't at Sainsbury's. So knocking where I work doesn't concern me.

Sainsbury's employs around 150,000, Tesco must be more than that and I bet Asda would be too. It's more an attack on them.

From the experience I have had, and Sainsbury's does employ graduates, they've all been up their own backsides.

I, personally, couldn't give a damn whether I had a job or not. To me there is one thing in life more important than a job and money.

I don't think mark_jones13 has enough manners to be nice to the 'little people' he even considers he is subsidising the Police etc. :rotfl:
You are not subsidising hon, you are paying what the government says you are to pay out of your, no doubt over-inflated salary.
There may be positions open to people with good degrees in London with salaries that exceed £100,000 but what a lifestyle eh? Stress, hustle and bustle, housing that costs hundreds of thousands just for a basic terrace. You can keep London, who wants to live there?

All this "University is useless" talk is just people trying to delude themselves. The Richard Branson thing is always used by the dregs of society to tell people in University that they're wasting their time. That along with "I'll win the lottery one day"

I've not done the lottery regularly for about 6 years, i have a couple of goes every now and again. I believe that any fortune you may have you create yourself. I've never told anyone that uni is a waste of time, i've taken my personal choice and am content with it. As i stated previously i've started my own business up recently as a hobby/sideline, maybe one day it'll grow into something i can give my full time job up for, maybe not but i'm certainly prepared to give it everything i can.

You have to remember that Branson set up his own business and came from a wealthy background.

This is true - he may come from wealthy stock but he only ever received a £500 loan from his parents to set his first business up.
Anyone can go as high as they want if they set up their own business.

    See previous comment!
But i suspect that most of the non graduates on this board haven't quite reached the top yet because 99.99999% will just open one little shop and leave it at that.

Bit of a sweeping generalisation methinks!! Could the country really support all these 'little shops'??

If you want a good job working for someone else then you need a degree. If you look at the appointments section in the Times you'll see all of the £100k jobs in the City all ask for degrees.

It shows that you have transferable skills.

I'm pretty certain a CV does that as well!?

You cannot say that someone with 5 GCSEs is more likely to succeed than a person with a 2.1 in Chemistry.

And you can't say that they're less likely to succeed either really.

The person with the degree has already shown the drive and ambition while the school drop out is just a lay about doing whatever job they can get. That person will delude themselves that they are happy and successful but they'll feel a lot less successful when they see that Univesity (SP??) graduate driving past in a brand new car.

I'm doing a job i (reasonably) enjoy - as i stated previously there is just no more scope for advancement here due to the nature of the business. If anyone (not just a graduate) chooses to buy a car and have its value depreciate by 30% once driven off the forecourt that's entirely up to them, not a way i'd choose to buy a car personally but that's just me! What makes me happier than anything is knowing that i bought a house before the market went into orbit and know that my mortgage is small enough to allow me to enjoy life without being stressed out worrying about the next interest rate hike leaving me living beyond my means!

I'm sure all you non graduates are very happy with your average £25,000 a year wages. But I wanted more so I went to University.
This may be the national average but where i live £25k is a damn good wage. Whenever i hear this statistic it makes me a little peeved as it's so misleading (taking into account all the company directors, fatcats etc whos telephone no. salaries leave them so detached from the real world)
Besides while you are earning lower wages you are paying a lot less tax compared to graduates so do take a minute to thank us graduates for subsidising your healthcare and police won't you.

Lastly - i'm pretty sure that's it's council tax that provides a sizeable contribution to the running costs of the police, not income tax!! I could of course be wrong (i often am!)

Daveboy didn't you have £9,000 worth of debt a few years ago. You didn't even tell your family anything about it remember. It was spread over 4 cards if I remember correctly.

So isn't that just about the same as a debt from a University education. I doubt that the things you bought were anywhere near as useful as education.

  • My post wasn't to moan about non graduates, but to complain about the people who don't go to University through their own choice and then complain about students, tell us what a waste of time education is and how we've wasted money.

A lot of my friends didn't go to University but they never go on about how going to Uni is a useless waste of time as most of the people such as Ember999 think it is.

It seems that everone on this board thinks that its fine to criticise graduates and students but as soon as I criticise the people who didn't go to Uni and moan about those who do I turn into the bad guy.

I'm sure that you're all happy with your lives as they are. But don't complain about those of us who chose to go a bit further.

"Whinge whinge whinge whinge whinge. I didn't take the opportunity to go to university because I p!ssed around at school making life hell for swots and now I'm so jealous about all those people who went to university and have better jobs than me. Well, I went to the university of life and that makes me better than all you people who want to educate themselves."

I think there are a lot of you on here with serious chips on your shoulders! Given that a very large percentage of our population go to university, simply basic statistics will tell you that many of them will have no common sense, will not be able to spell, or will have been born with a silver spoon up their backside. I know several 'posh' graduates who have never really had to work hard, and never will, because of their parental background; but they would be the same whether they went to university or not. As for non-students, I know of dole-scrounging coke heads who spent their school careers bullying those who worked hard, and generally causing mayhem for everyone else. I also know girls who went through strings of guys just to get pregnant and jump up the housing queue. This doesn't mean that all non-graduates are like this, and those of you championing university-avoidance would do well to use your intelligence and avoid making such stupid generalisations about graduates.
