Have just signed up and had e-mail confirmation back straight away. I also belong to 18866 and 1899. Now off to alter my Orchid dialler (for those who know what I mean - the 18185 service is already on the Orchid dialler "Carrier" drop down lists) for w/end calls to mobiles (4p connection plus 2p/min) and 0870 peak rate (4p connection plus 4p/min) and calls to UAE landlines (4p plus 10p/min...previously 1899 charged 3p plus 12p/min)......
  • Our friends in Switzerland have launched another short code cheap call telephone service in addition to 1899/18866. This time its 18185.See
    www.18185.co.uk ........
...... Connection charge is 4p a min,and call costs are rounded up to nearest penny.

    Hi pricefighter.

Thanks for yet another useful post. I have just registered with them.

Re the connection charge, don't you mean 4p per call rather than 4p a minute? If so, perhaps you could edit the post.
  • I just noticed that under the heading "Great benefits for Non-BT callers as well!" where they give the alternative acces numbers for those calling from non-BT lines, they quote a different connection charge for those using their 0808 or 020 7 access numbers: "A 2p connection fee applies to all calls."

Whether that is a mistake or they really do have a lower connection charge for those using the 0808 or 020 7 access than for those using 18185 I don't know.

If it's true, then people dialling from BT might prefer to use the 0808 access number if they can be bothered with it (or if they have the Orchid dialler). On the minus side, I think the charging can start sooner that way so it may not be worthwhile for all numbers/situations).

From what I can see is BT users when using the 18185 number get charged 4p connection fee and then 0p per min, but cable users get charged 2p connection fee and get charged 1p per min for using the service.

Just signed up the office number as we have to use a fair number of 0845/0870 numbers with no time to check for geographical ones.

Thanks for this and the website worked just fine :D

Yes it would be no good people using the cable access numbers via BT to reduce the connection charge if they were dialling normal UK landline numbers because the call charges are higher. But then, if that's what they are calling, they shouldn't be using 18185 anyway as there are cheaper companies for this.

It would be more useful when calling eg 0870 numbers (but again, it may not be worth it for a 2p saving which may be offset by a slightly longer call charge).
  • I'm signed up  ,gotta wait for confirmation email, and just gotta contact Toby @ Orchid to get my dialler info updated :j

I think I'm correct in saying that Dialwise is still cheaper than 18185 for 0845 peak rate at 2p/min.
