    I suggest you read

    and

...and then I suggest you stop accepting PAYPAL as a payment on ebay.

    Hope that helps.

These sites are for those with a grudge against paypal and are going to be very heavily loaded onto one point of view. Having said that, I don't use paypal as I don't sell enough and their charges would erode any profit I may make. I also dislike their policy of 'directing' you to use a bank a/c for funding payments instead of a credit card and making any complaints gets you only standard e-mail responses.

Appreciate that it can be a benefit for larger users but it isn't a rose garden by any stretch.

Agreed. I sometimes wonder if these sites do their argument any good at all. The clear emotional undertones and bias are enough to put me off any valid points they may make. I wonder if if more balanced view would be more convincing, or if it would dilute these accounts to the point that they look like too much of a rare occurance to actually put anyone off.

If things go wrong, PAYPAL will time and time again come down on the side of the buyer and I have read too many stories of people being conned out of laptops, phones cameras etc etc when it transpires that the paypal transaction was made with a stolen credit card. If this happens Paypal will reverse the payment immediately and you will be left with no goods and no PAYPAL.

The PAYPAL seller protection is worthless.

I only accept Personal Cheques or Bank Transfers for ebay sales. They may take a little longer but they are FREE and a lot less risky. I only ship goods sold on ebay when the Personal Cheque has cleared.

    Hope that helps.

the paypal process is totally flawed......someone logged a dispute a week after a sale stating that i hadnt sent the item....they were totally unreasonable but they screwed up as id sent it by special delivery and they had signed for it......yet paypal still tried to side with them.....so i threatened pyapal with the watchdog and legal action...they soon backed down

Well yes it is. But I am not the author of those websites. I am merely offering the benefit of the extensive online experience I have of seeing PAYPAL go wrong for those accepting it as a form of payment without kowing the risks.

Please read my Original Post. I referred to other web sources where these events are a daily occurence. Have a look at the Suppliers forum over on the dvd forums, just as one example.

Geoggy, if you know of another payment method that offers the same level of cover for buyers to claw back their money from dodgy sellers when things go wrong, I'd love to hear about it.

Your point is irrelevant. My post is regarding "accepting" paypal. Not paying by Paypal. I use it myself for low value transactions but only with sellers with huge feedback scores. As a buyer what PAYPAL do or don't do for you if you don't receive the goods is irrelevant anyway. Heard of credit card chargebacks i assume?

I could say the same about your contribution. The respondent seemed to understand my point.

Look, I didn't post this information for all you PAYPAL luvvies to jump on me like a pack of wolves. Yes you are entitled to your opinion, but users that are new to ebay and PAYPAL should understand the potential risks.

Otherwise what is the point of this forum? Tea and sympathy in a reactive manner when people have been ripped off?

I was trying to be pro active so people can make their own mind up about if those websites are biased (although i havent come across w*w.paypalisgreat.com) and make a balanced judgement about the risks involved and this risk in relation to the volume of sales / type of merchandise they are looking to sell.

I have never lost money as a seller through PAYPAL, so I have no personal axe to grind.

I was merely offering alternatives and a view of the risks to try and limit the number of ripped off fellow moneysavers.

I apologise if those quoted above feel this is a bad thing.

I've personally never had any problems with Paypal, although obviously I realise there is a first time for everything! I just like the convenience of it. I find cheques an absolute nightmare. There is no bank near where I work so if anyone sends a cheque I have to drive to town on a Saturday (where the banks close at midday).

    Online bank transfer?

Geoggy, until a week or two ago I would have insisted that bank transfers were the bees knees for sellers (not for buyers though), however, there was a worrying thread on here about how they too can be recalled in specific circumstances.

The only conclusion I have come to is that nothing is 100% safe, if someone deliberately sets out to defraud you then they will do so. The only thing we can do as sellers is to take all the precautions that we can. Also, don;t forget that losses can be offset as a business expense for those that declare their ebay income to the Inland Revenue.

On a personal note my one and only neutral (luckily on a minor id I rarely used) was for slow delivery after a bank transfer. I was absolutely furious, a buyer with less than 20 feedback and a neg already for non payment pays me by bank transfer and insists that I send item immediately as he had paid. I waited the three days for the bank transfer to show in my account and then sent the item and he sent me a quite unpleasant email accusing me of holding onto his money and witholding goods that he had paid for, and then left me a neutral. grrrr

I left positive feedback as soon as I had his payment in my account and sent the parcel as I do in 90% of cases. However, I probably wouldn't have negged him anyway, the most I would have done is left a return neutral saying that buyer wanted item posted before payment received, or possibly left no feedback at all.

This all happened well over a year ago and strangely enough he is now NARU for no apparent reason. On a side note it is well worth going through your blocked bidder lists occasionally and checking out the people you have blocked, as I did with this guy, probably as many as two thirds to three quarters of the people on my blocked bidders list ended up NARU'd eventually so it does look like some people are just not good on ebay.

I never leave feedback until the transaction is complete. Receiving payment is not a complete transaction in my eyes. When the buyer recieves the goods and lets me know they are happy, I then leave feedback.

So much can happen between you getting paid that is our of your control. I want to see how the person is if things go wrong with the post for example. Do they act reasonably or turn into a "you lost my item now refund me or ill neg you" raving lunatic?

Feedback to me is about the whole process. Not the first stage.

In the above example you gave I would have negged them for being unreasonable. Hopwever as soon as I get the first copntact from a buyer I send them a nice email with a planned shipping date on it, that xlearly explains the expected clearance time of the chq / BCAS.
