Do you accept PAYPAL on ebay? Then read this URGENTLY.......

I frequent several of this type of forum on the net and they are constantly full of people who are having problems because of PAYPAL.

I suggest you read

w*w.paypalwarning.com

and

w*w.paypalsucks.com

...and then I suggest you stop accepting PAYPAL as a payment on ebay.

If things go wrong, PAYPAL will time and time again come down on the side of the buyer and I have read too many stories of people being conned out of laptops, phones cameras etc etc when it transpires that the paypal transaction was made with a stolen credit card. If this happens Paypal will reverse the payment immediately and you will be left with no goods and no PAYPAL.

The PAYPAL seller protection is worthless.

I only accept Personal Cheques or Bank Transfers for ebay sales. They may take a little longer but they are FREE and a lot less risky. I only ship goods sold on ebay when the Personal Cheque has cleared.

Hope that helps.

Since I have never had problems with paypal but have had problems with cheques I know which I prefer.

I also like the fact that using paypal means I can sell overseas very easily. As a buyer I wouldn't dream of buying unless I can use paypal and I'm not alone, so the less sellers offering it the less competitiion I have as a seller.

soolin - clearly everyones personal experience is different. However there are at least 3 different threads on the board right now that are as a result of paypal.

do you not think that this, or indeed the 1000's of bad experiences mentioned on the websites above are sufficient enough to accept that using PAYPAL is not without its risks?

I just find your post (from the "Board Guide") paints a false impression that everything is rosy in the PAYPAL garden when clearly it is not. I also find your comments surprising with regards to the proliferation of your own ebay activities should people choose to ignore my advice.

Maybe your opinion will change the first time you encounter a bad experience with Paypal?

    Thanks

Naturally and I wouldn't expect otherwise. This board is primarily used for problems, so we get questions about paypal just as we get questions about Nigerian scammers or shill bidders. It does give a false impression that all ebayers are shill bidders or scammers or that all paypal transactions are fraudulent, howver overall most people will not have problems so don't bother reading a board like this.

I have never said that paypal is not without risks, however most, but not all, risks can be dealt with by understanding how paypal works. The only risk that I can see no way of avoiding is when a fraudulent card is used and a clever scammer will get you whether he uses paypal or a bank cheque.

I am happy that people can express certain views, however neither of us can claim to be 'right' we are both just expressing our own personal views and it is up to other users to decide how they want to deal with the risks of buying and selling on ebay.

Maybe it will or maybe it won't I have had problems with cheques and understand the risks yet I still take them. I accept that I cannot be entirely risk free on ebay whatever I do, all I can do is try to play it as safe as I can.

Geoggy this is purely your personal opinion and judgement.Everyone has different views.
I personally prefer paypal as it is so quick and easy and with over a 900+ transactions I have never had a problem. Each payment method has its pros and cons and it is up to each individaul to make a descion based on their views and experiances. In fact paypal has worked twice in my favour with purchases I have made.
On this board as the ebay board you generally only hear the bad experiences but if you understand how paypal works and always take the proper precautions it is still the number one payment method for ebay.
Scammers and crooks will, and do use any payment method to con people.I personally believe the number of incidenances of abuse are low compared to the volume of transactions that are processed. If I was scared of con merchants on ebay I would just give up selling as no payment method is foolproof. However I am quite happy to continue as paypal as my preferred, quickest payment method which has served me well. You are entiteld to your own view.

i guess with stolen credit cards not much can be done by anyone whether ur a local shop keeper or paypal acoount holder except to try and ship to a verified address but that would possibly mean losing most of ur ebay buyers since the ones ive traded with are not verified at all.

Personally, I do not sell on e-Bay, but when buying, I would always favour items that I could pay for using paypal, even if they were slightly more expensive. I'm sure there are plenty more like me out there.

Geoggy, if you know of another payment method that offers the same level of cover for buyers to claw back their money from dodgy sellers when things go wrong, I'd love to hear about it.

i lost £200 thanks to paypal, but, unfortunatley as a seller, after 3 years, i now have no choice, i'm loosing the smaller sales if i dont take it.

i still wont accept it for high value items >20 or so
i won't accept it for low feedback usere <10 unless theres a damn good reason
i wont post to low feedback users with an unregistered address full stop
and under NO circumstances will I ever post to an address other than the paypal one

buyers seem to be happy with that

may I also point you to another website, https://www.aboutpaypal.org
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

I had a bad experience with ebay/paypal and went through the dispute system but did not have any joy as the seller who conned me did not have sufficent funds in their paypal account to refund me (that was paypals reply) I had paid by paypal but the nmoney had come from my current account via Visa/debit card so contacted the bank and they took the matter up with paypal and I was refunded 48hours later.............. Result! :j :T
  • Now I've not used ebay or paypal, but thought you should see what happened to these guys. Seller stole £349 from buyer on ebay using Paypal and buyer has taken him to court and won, how long it takes him to receive this money is another matter!!!
