Don't watch live TV if you feel you are being "forced" to pay something.

    Your choice.

The choice should be not to turn off but to pay or not to pay.
There was a time when you had to have a licence to watch the BBC only.
The establishment allowed the rules to be changed so that the greedy gravy train riders could keep their fat pay cheques coming in.
How any one can agree with such a law is beyond me.
If you love the BBC so much then you should pay for it via subscription.
If the BBC is really so marvellous a subscription service would be successful.
They know the service is so unpopular that subscriptions would be so low that the BBC would crumble.
There can be no other reason to not introduce pay as you watch.
They are using a taxation to keep a so called 'independent' production company in business.
    Disgraceful.

The BBC is the national broadcaster for the UK. It is funded by government. Most countries have a national broadcaster which is funded by government. They have various purposes which include education, public information, broadcasting in an emergency etc. Most are partly funded by commercials as well as by government. The UK is one of the few countries where the national broadcaster is almost 100% funding by government and has no commercials.

Point 1. Not true. It is funded by the tax payer, in this case by a specific tax, the licence fee. The government doesn't fund anything.
Point 2. They would still serve the same purpose via subscription.
Point 3. They advertise daily. Almost every 'guest' that is on a 'chat' show or breakfast tv are there to promote a book, movie, album etc.
The National lottery is a profit making organisation. It is advertised on the BBC weekly at least.
Again, if the BBC is genuinely so fantastic they have no need to fear the scrapping of the licence fee.

  • I have to agree that the licence fee is no longer fit for purpose.

The BBC has, in recent years, lost it's way unfortunately.

However, I am a taxpayer and I don't fund the BBC, my choice.

There are alternatives for watching TV, legally, albeit not live TV

There are no adverts on the BBC in the traditional sense as on commercial TV.

For something so unpopular, as claimed above, as the BBC it still seems a lot of people watch their channels. :)
Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

    Signed, Thank you sir.
Strangely, unlike the anti Brexit petitions, I don't recall mention of this on shows such as Andrew Marr, Politics Live etc. :D

Traditional or not, they are advertising goods.

Of course they do, it's included in the tax.
If as many continue to watch if there was a subscription, then I would be wrong in my assumption.

Not true. Is it? surely funded by government = funded by tax-payer.

BTW I totally agree with you that the licence fee is a tax. The BBC have in the past run adverts which implied that the licence fee is a subscription to the BBC but in fact it is a tax imposed by government on people who operate a TV to receive TV broadcasts.

Most Government Funds come from taxes, duties, and borrowing.

Funded by the government suggests paid for from government funds.

The TV license is a hypothecated tax. It is collected by, or on behalf of, the BBC. The BBC is an independent non governmental body.

BBC domestic services are not funded by the Government. They are funded mainly by people who watch live television, whether they watch the BBC or not.
  • Easy really..... the BBC's public service remit should be paid out of general taxation and anything else, yes I'm looking at you strictly come dancing should be an add on subscription for those that want it.
