    Are you a relative

You must be covered by a valid TV Licence to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV if you’re a tenant or lodger
  • Finally took the plunge, now license free :)

Not watched live tv for years and the old VHS is not much use for recording anything being broadcast... Even daughter has no interest in live tv!

With all the 'non live' content on plex, dvds, netflix, youtube, now tv etc live tv to me has past it's sell by date. Much prefer watching something on demand than watch total dross and endless adverts.

Anyway, all the booster equipment that makes the TV aerial work has been removed and the TV detuned.

Cheers all for the enlightenment :)

I always found the part about joint tenancy but locks on doors unclear, I knew that if you have a joint tenancy and no locks on door it came under 1 household therefore its 1 for entire property it was when you had locks because if you have seperate tenancies but no locks you need one(so I have been told)

I always remember having a massive argument with a flatmate 6 years ago who had a license for her room and I left a tv in living room and one day a TVL letter came through the door saying we were breaking the law, she told me I would get everyone fined and the fine was thousands each, then to take the tv into my bedroom(the tv weight about 80kg, took about 3 people to move it into property!) and even if it was liftable the stairway wasnt wide enough to get it up.

My argument was that I had it connected to dvd player and pc(and no aerial) therefore it was covered she said that owning a tv meant I needed a license(a common misconception)

Though looking at the website now it says that seperate tenancy agreements need 1 per room but they also cover communal areas, if I was watching live tv wouldnt her license cover the living room tv which I owned?

Hmm also what about say en suite bedsits i.e I remember a few years back living in a place where I had my own toilet shower and washbasin(and a mini fridge) but shared a kitchen, the terms talk about if you have exclusive washing facilities you need one but that means many student accomodations I see advertised by landlords as having tv license paid and en suite rooms is wrong then again even more so when they let out room by room and not per house.

There are widespread misconceptions, and TVL's reputation is wildly exaggerated in many people's minds.

An elderly relative of mine, who doesn't have a TV, is being harassed by the scum and I'm going to write to them to desist. Is there a standard letter for WOIRA etc. I did a search here but couldn't find one.

Not old enough for the free one. Does the SORN stop the harassment? I'm guessing not.

I'm wondering whether I can write on their behalf, or if it has to come from them. I'd like to give my address for correspondence.
