I wish I could do jury duty but I can't because I work for the police and would probably have knowledge of the case :(
(and it's not called jury duty for nothing!;) )

As there is no "reasonable" parking in Croydon (plenty of parking but high cost-Scarbrook Road is probably the best value for the centre if you are worried about not been able to claim until the Friday) they'll cover parking as reasonable expenses anyway.
Just another excuse to moan and not want to contribute to our society IMO
Funny how people who are so keen on "rights" never want to give back.

hmm... since this thread started and reappeared, i've had to be a witness in court. and my feelings on this have become a bit more extreme.

<rant>now being a witness really is inconvenient! i had to give evidence over something where someone was just clearly lying (thankfully i was neutral to the whole thing up until the particular event occured). so i get to take a day off work (no reimbursement for time, just travel), sit there and have the defense pull apart everything i said.... luckily the individual was found guilty. but honestly, trying to avoid jury service is just appalling - it insults all the people in the other parts of the criminal justice system (police, CPS, witness support) by effectively saying that it isn't important. i think parents in particular should be teaching their children some sense of responsibility, not passing the buck as it's a bit awkward. if people think they are above contributing to society because their wage is greater than the amount paid to do jury service, then fine - let them miss out on every other part of the important work of crime prevention and prosecution. i hated going to court - but it was something that needed to be done. jury service is just the same - sometimes it really is impossible, but trying to avoid it completely via a series of poor excuses (i.e. an excuse not a reason!) is something to be ashamed of. </rant>

You need to contact them. If you have not heard back from them, then they may not have received your letter, and therefore could still be expecting you to attend.

assume 2 weeks minimum- most firms should allow this as paid leave, but depends on your contract.

when i did it, you could claim mileage allowance, and there was space in the court carpark available, f.o.c. - ask the court clerk in advance if costs can be claimed, or if they have arrangements in place.

btw, its not meant to be a money earner- more of a civil duty.. though your jigsaw puzzle skills will improve, while waiting around!

I was just worried about taking a reduction in money just before a holiday thats costing us just over 2k for 2 of us. Not a great time for the state to stop me earning.
Is it not fair enough to question the financial aspect of it.
Would you like to be told you are doing the following two weeks for less than usual & probably more hours too?

How is it the Court's problem that you have booked a holiday that you can barely afford?! And if it's booked already, surely it's part paid for (albeit on credit cards)? I don't think it's reasonable that the Court (or society) be held responsible for the way you manage your money...

It strikes me that this is just another excuse to get out of having to do it. There'll probably NEVER be a time in your life when Jury Duty is 'convenient' but suggesting that "those on benefits who have more time on their hands" do YOUR civil duty so that you can afford your expensive holidays is unbelievable.

There are people out there with genuine reasons for not being able to make Jury Duty (and, admittedly being 8 months pregnant is one of them), but potential loss of income which may impact on your ability to afford an expensive holiday is not one of them.

    Rant over...

Nah, poster has finances in some sort of balance, and the jury service puts that out of kilter. Why should everyone have to keep a stash in hand just to sub for jury service?
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?
