If one member of the household already receives the winter fuel benefit then when a second member becomes eligible there will be no increase. The amount is the same no matter whether there are one or two of you eligible.
If the second person does not claim there will be a decrease. See my post #33 on this thread

    Hi Brodev,

Thanks for that - this is what I was querying really as I knew it would be the same overall amount. I phoned the helpline and what you say is correct - if my mum were to not fill the form in there is a danger my dad would get paid the shared amount as opposed to the full amount leaving them £125 out of pocket. Basically what should happen is my mum will be paid the shared amount of £125 and my dad will also be paid that but he will have the additional £150 added onto his payment for being over 80 so it will come to £125 for her and £275 for him. Thanks.

    Regards

    Michelle

My MIL went into a care home after her last winter fuel payment of £300 in 2007. We have been told both that she is not entitled and that she is entitled to half i.e. that would normally have been £150 & presumeably £200 for this coming year. My MIL is self-funding. Can anyone clarify?

It's probably worth checking because you may find she can keep it all. My Dad died in October 2000 and his winter fuel payment arrived in the November. We tried to send it back but they said that as he'd been eligible in the September that it was his to keep. I told them he was actually dead and that some other old guy now lived in his flat, but they were adamant that it was his (ours) to keep.

Yes you should, and then they will pay it half each to both of you.

I downloaded the claim form for winter fuel payment for 2008/09 off the website https://www.thepensionservice/gov.uk/winterfuel so that, as EdInvestor mentions, I will have half paid to me. (I am 60, OH 61 but he gets his because he has an industrial injury benefit.)

Now what puzzles me is that this form requires me to send my birth certificate as they "need to have proof of your date of birth" yet I get my retirement pension so my identity has been proved at some point as my pension is paid weekly into my bank (if I remember correctly I had to send in my birth certificate to claim my pension). Also you need to fill in your N.I. number so if they tie this up with the retirement pension that they already send me then surely they already have proof of my date of birth???????? Or am I missing something?

It's very likely they will already have sorted you, but it doesn't hurt to make a proper claim, especially if there is something a bit unusual, as in your case.Just indicate you are already in receipt of state pension.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Thank you Ed. I will complete the form and send it off with a covering letter and see what happens.
