    Dont forget, its being phased in from 2010, you will have to be 65 to get the WFA. so you mid 50s will have to wait another 5 years.
    So my husband will be 60 on the 13th march 2010 does that mean he will have to wait till he is 65? or as his birthday is before the 30th will he still be in? Thanks

    A Cautionary tale. I and my wife spend the winter months in Spain/Portugal. I am 3 years older than my wife. I was in receipt of £200 WFP. The year my wife beame 60 they reduced my payment to £100. My wife's pension had been deferred and she did not claim. She received nothing. As we were abroad we did not see our bank statements and did not discover till we returned home in April. By that time it was too late to claim and so we missed out on £100. In this case the authorities right hand knew what the left hand was doing but not the other way round.

    I receive a local government pension which has to be taxed at source as does old age pensions.

    Local government/Civil Service/Teachers pensions are taxed in the UK. Old age pensions should be taxed in the country of residence.
  • If you are claiming winter fuel allowance you may be eligible for the Warm Front Grant to get insulation and a new boiler, if you are over 60 and claiming one of these benefits;
    • Income Support
    • Council Tax Benefit
    • Housing Benefit
    • Job Seekers Allowance (income-based)
    • Pension Credit
    If you don’t qualify for the grant you might still be able to get a £300 rebate, the official Warm Front site is at www.warmfront.co.uk

    .....and also if you are over 65 and get Attendance Allowance even if not getting any of the means-tested benefits listed above.

    AA is not means-tested but it does qualify you for WarmFront grant.

    I have had £200 for the last 2 winters since I was 60.
    DH was 61 last Dec, still working, has not claimed.
    Does he have to or can I still get the full amount ,including the forthcoming increase? Anyone see any drawbacks in him not claiming?

    This year's extra is £50 per household rather than per person added to the £200 you will get so no need for DH to claim at all as it would still work out at £250 between you.

    Will you be drawing your state pension immediately?

    Actually, ignore that, you definitely have to claim the first time, whether or not you're drawing the state pension - there will be an online application form on the pension website in another 2/3 weeks. I think as long as you're 60 before september, you'll be eligible.
