Tesco Mis-Price

I was hoping someone here could help me with this one as I'm getting contradicting information as to my rights.
I was shopping a couple of months ago in Tesco's and saw a yellow BOGOF offer shelf label on 200g jars of coffee. So I picked up 4 and went to the checkout. As the till girl put them through I noticed the price was way higher than what it should be and asked her to check. She came back saying "The expiry date was printed on the shelf-edge label and this offer had ended 4 days ago, and it's the customer's responsibility to check this, not ours."
I got my glasses out and yes in the right light under a magnifying glass it did state an expiry date on the shelf label.
But I still feel this is illegal and that the store should honour the offer if they leave the label up. As it's not my fault their staff are to lazy to check the shelf labels. In fact it could be classed as criminal as they could be miss-leading people in to adding these items to their shopping basket in the hope they would not notice the offer had ended.
Trading standards say Tesco's are perfectly within their rights!?!

Yeah, they are.
They don't have to honour any price (as far as I know?), some will as a gesture of good will.0 -

When I worked for Tesco, I did a stint in File Management Control, part of which was price checking. We would have 'legal errors' and 'illegal errors', it's not hard to work out which we called which. The story was that we could get a £1,000 fine for each item we were overcharging on.
Unless things have changed, if they charge you more than the shelf edge label says, that is illegal. However, they didn't, you stopped them.
You'd have been better off paying it and then taking it up with CS, they used to give you your money back and the item, now it's double the difference I believe?Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0 -

Mental note to self, when shopping in Tesco I must take on the role of Staff member and remove out of date prices off shelf, whilst I am there I may as well check the dates on stock too, grab a cage of stock and fill up seeing as they are normally left in my way, oh and if its busy I should make the effort to jump on a till to get the queue down. :rotfl: :rotfl:
Next time do as the others have said, dont mention it, pay and then go to CS.0 -

So did you have the right lighting, a magnifying glass and your glasses on you at the time?
Something tells me you're exaggerating a little.....
Why the !!!! are you worrying about this - don't you have anything more pressing to attend to? You're worrying about "your rights" and you're asking about a JAR OF COFFEE !!!!!!!0 -
Surely its up to tesco to make sure any OLD advertising is removed frm display well its done in sainsburys where i work, it then solves the problem of customers moaning about being charged the wrong priceNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

Their Double The Difference policy is legally binding under Section 14 of the Trade Descriptions Act, and there are no caveats attached to this policy which state that customers are supposed to check expiry dates on SELs.wizard5353 wrote: »Trading standards say Tesco's are perfectly within their rights!?!
I'd go back to Trading Standards and explain the bit I've just posted above. Maybe they weren't aware of the DTD policy (although they should be) when they told you this.
I'd also tell them about the Consumer Protection Act 1987 which makes it a criminal offence for a trader to display misleading price indications. The presence of a tiny expiry date does not get Tesco off the hook.
It's no wonder Tesco are getting away with murder when Trading Standards don't even know the law.0 -

Told you about Trading Standards Phil. They see these things as just being petty. Yet another example.
Lets be honest as posted above, people actually worry about their rights over a jar of coffee:rotfl:
I know you hate it when I go off on a psychological analysis but this is classic short man syndrome. Short man syndrome being a state of mind rather than making an assumption about ones height.0 -

Back in the day Tescos honoured any mistakes like this.
Then some freeloaders tried to milk it."Love you Dave Brooker! x"
