in relation to using omneo comfort, the poo will be quite green and can be a shock for the first sight of it as it looks abnormal, however dont be alarmed at this as it is very common.
another thing to consider though when giving formula milk to babies its well worth offering them a drink of cooled boiled water to satisfy their thirst, (not usually required for breastfed babies)

also could you manually express milk without the use of a machine? i find that when mums are shown how to do this by a breastfeeding support worker, they usually have quicker results.

in relation to teats, buy a vari-flow just to be on the safe side - its trial and error im afraid at first.

    Hi Jellyhead,

Hope things are going a bit better, and you are getting a bit of sleep.

I used avent bottles and pump (although it has about 8 pieces to assemble which was a pain) but one of my friends had a nightmare with her baby boy with teats as she had to return to work while breastfeeding- she finally used the NUK ones, which are a completely different shape - sort of flattish like they are when they're being sucked- maybe you could try them.

Also rather than buying new teats every time mini-bun needed a faster flow, I made the holes myself with a sterilized heated needle. You could try experimenting with one by adding a hole at a time until Roo is happy, and then do the rest.

In terms of the colic, if Roo is having some breastmilk check you aren't eating anything which may be upsetting him/giving him wind. I certainly wish I had taken mini-bun to the cranial osteopath - he was failed venteuse and forceps and always hated being laid down etc, and I'm sure this was part of the colic he had for a while too. It all passed when he could support himself.

good luck and look after yourself.

(I hope you realise you will have to pass on advice if any of us have another!)

    thanks everyone :-)

i think it's colic, the midwife and health visitor both think it is too, purely because it's only in the evening. my other son screamed 24 hours a day :rotfl: NUK teats sound good, he's so rubbish at getting his tongue into position on the bottle, no chance on the breast but he finds his flat dummy quite easy.

i've read about cranial osteopathy before, probably on this forum somewhere. my labour once established was only 3.5 hours on the drip, the pushing stage was around 40 minutes and he didn't need ventouse or forceps, i didn't have anything except gas and air so i don't think that affected him much. i don't know if that is a particularly quick birth, the others on the ward were between 16-45 hours but without the drip, actually the 16 hour labour was on a drip and she had ventouse and forceps in the end. in comparison roo's birth was easy and quick but i don't know if maybe it was too quick? i was talking to some people in the playground a while back and all those whose babies had been induced with the drip had angry babies, could it be because they're not ready to be born of their own accord? do you think cranial osteopathy might help a baby who wasn't born using suction and who wasn't stuck for 2 days in the birth canal? i'll ask the health visitor on monday anyway. interesting that mini-bun got better when he could support himself - is that roughly the age they say colic gets better? maybe it doesn't get better, it just feels worse when they can't wriggle into positions to make their tummies feel a bit better.

well, i'll be prepared for green poo then when i start the omneo. he has 2 feeds of breastmilk a day, the other 4 or 5 are formula. he's not keen on drinks of water, the midwife said to add extra water to a couple of his feeds but all the books say never do that. he has about an ounce of water per day, doesn't want any more than that but i think he gets some extra water in my breastmilk. he only does one or two dirty nappies a day and they seem to be very painful for him - is that normal? i did ask in hospital when it had been more than 12 hours since the last one and they said to see if he did one every 24 hours.

hmmmm, everyone says new parents talk about baby poo, i didn't believe them lol!

purplepatch thanks for that link to the sutherland society page. it makes a lot of sense, especially where it talks about problems in older children - my sister had a bad time with forceps for her first baby and he has a lot of the problems mentioned now, perhaps cranial osteopathy when he was a baby could have helped.

    Hi Jellyhead,

I started seeing an osteopathist during my pregnancy and he is a godsend. Dont know how I would ahve got through with out him.
He is very qualified and does cranial osteopathy - I have been reading about it whilst in waiting room and definitley think it is worth a try.
    U have nothing to loose.

    I know I would.

  • Avent bottles here too - and used the silicone teats rather than the rubber ones as they lasted longer (harder for his maj to chew/gum through) - and nice wide necks for filling :)

Another vote for Avent!! Used with both DS1 & DS2-fab!!

Another thought about formula - DS1 was V.V. sicky etc & had sensitive skin/eczema. The one that suited him was Milupa milk (we used Milumil about £5.99 per box.) Was so effective, that we automatically put DS2 on it!

Best of luck, hope you're managing to get some rest (I know,I know!!)

Hi Jellyhead....congrats on your new baby.

I can't offer much advice I have no children of my own yet but I used to watch The Baby Whisperer on TV and she (Tracy Hogg) has a website that sells bottles that she says don't cause colic. They are called Haberman Feeders. They are quite expensive but I know that when I do get pregnant again I'm definately putting an order in on her site! Mothers on TV whose babies suffered from colic tried theses bottles and got results within days. The bottles look odd as they have a large chamber which the milk is in then a smaller one into which the milk flows but only as and when the baby sucks so when baby wants a rest the milk stops flowing and its airtight so that no air can get sucked in by baby thus causing colic. They also sell avent but not sure how cheap/expensive they are as I don't know how much they are in shops.

The site addy is www.babywhisperer.com then on left hand side....online store.

    Hi there..
we used Dr Browns and OMG! they stoppped us from having a nervous breakdown. We were absolutely broke at the time and managed with 1 bottle ( lol ) and it was a free one that our health visitor got us from the company as a free sample. Eventually my mum bought us a couple more and eventually the collic clamed down but i can not recomend them enough... Dr Brown should be given a knighthood in IMO
:EasterBun ...what more do I need to say?!

    Hi
My daughter (now 7 months) had really bad colic, when she was younger - we used TT, and Avent, and I think it made her colic worse. This was until we got B-Free (Dr Browns) bottles, and we had success from the first bottle! The bottles (with level 2 teats - the level 1 teats that come with the bottles can be quite slow), and dentinox colic drops stopped her being very colicy 9 times out of 10. Stopped me from having further PND (i'm good now), and endless nights of waking up, and staying up at 1am!
