i'm looking for advice on which baby bottles i should buy next. baby is 11 days old, out of hospital for 7 days but already the measurements have come off his tommy tippee bottles so i can't measure water correctly. i've got 8 bottles, it's not as if they are being washed and sterilised every 5 minutes, it's a microwave steriliser so no chemical etc. needless to say i am not too impressed with the TT bottles now and am looking to buy a different brand.
has anyone tried ultivent? do they prevent colic? somebody else mentioned i think it's called doctor b? i suppose i could just buy one of each type to try, but i'd probably get the teats cofused!

we've used the normal avent ones 8 months on the measurements are still there despite daily wash and microwave sterilise(they aren't anti colic though so we just used infacol but as with all baby stuff, whats good for one isn't for another)0

Hiya Jellyhead
Hope you and baby are well!
I used the Avent range-you can buy the different flow speed teats depending on age and hunger of the child. You can normally buy them on special at Boots or could pay with your advantage points if you have enough
I'd so love another child, but dont think its possible with being so bloomin ill all the time. DS is now 10 and Im only 30.
Keep you and baby well. If you need any advice-Im a qualified baby consultant and used to work for Boots.

I've always used the avent bottles jelly and never had any collicky babies. You need to change teats when baby gets bored with the speed of the milk coming out. You can tell because they will get cross or give up. Thats the time to get a faster flow teat.:heart2:I have a child with autism.:heart2:0

Hi - Same here I have used avent bottles. My daughter is 9 months now and still using them. They may look boring in comparism to others but the quality is good and the numbers are still legible!
I rememeber someone mentioning Dr Brown bottles for colic. They are pricey though. I dont have experience of using them as I stuck to Infacol and Gripe water. That worked for my baby.:j BABY A :j0 -
Hi Jellyhead
Hope you and baby are well, just wanted to say i used avent with my little bundle and although they are supposed to be anti-colic i found my little one had constant colic, and the teats were always collapsing, nightmare i thought!
Best wishes o you and your new bundle0 -
Sorry Jellyhead, to hear you are having probs with your bottles...send someone back to the shop with them for a full refund!
I used some self sterilising ones from Mothercare. You put the lid upside down with a bit of water in, put all the bits in and clip the bottle on top, making a sealed unit, and microwave it like that. Fab!! The instructions give the times needed for sterilising between about 1 and 8 at a time. Have to say, it was great to be without a steriliser, and be able to do an odd one at a time rather than wait for a few, and be able to do them anywhere there was a microwave. Just wish they'd been invented for DS1 and DS2 too, but they were new out when DS3 was born, about 3 years ago.*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***
If I don't reply to you, I haven't looked back at the thread.....PM me0 -
We started out with TommyTippee bottles just because we got some free with the steriliser we bought, we needed a steriliser that you could use with Milton on the recommendation of the NICU nurses, we didn't like the TT bottles much because the lids were hard to get off, though they are now easier because they are quickly wearing out :-)
So we bought Avent bottles, much easier to use but our girls didn't like the teats so we now find the best solution is TT teats and Avent bottles. Morissons seem cheapest for TT teats.
If you need a breast pump do not buy TT, the £25 one we bought has broken in less than two months. We've got an Avent pump now and it seems much better.

congrats on the bith of the new baby, i bet your shattered.
in response to your querie could u return the tt bottles, they should be still good and able to do the job for which they were made for (making up formula milk), hopefully u could swap them for something different.
i have used both the boots own brand and the avent bottles, both are pretty good, and some of them are still being used on my 2nd baby from my first being born 4yrs ago, you can also buy colic reducing teats for both makes.
Dr browns bottles are good, of the new mums that i work with, those that have bought these bottles are extreemly pleased with the results, but they are very expensive at about £11 each, not such a good move when you need about 6 to start off with, and colic should only last a few weeks. the difference with these are that they have a tube running from the teat to the bottom of the bottle which reduces the bubbles that the baby takes in causing colic.
are you definatly sure its colic? you could try putting a folded towel under the moses basket (end where baby's head lays) to raise the mattress slightly at this end, this reduces the strain on the baby's oesophagus.
you are probably better using a colic drop such as colief or infacol, or good old gripe water onto the tongue prior to feeding. or if you have chosen your baby milk you wish to use you could try omneo comfort which has colic relief in it, this is a slightly more expensive milk and it is very thick, but its that consistency for a reason, so dont be tempted to water it down.
good luck in choosing your bottles and colic relief, i hope things settle soon.Give blood - its free0 -
I used Boots own with 1st but kept on losing the discs. Had Avent with 2nd, cos we got some free with Avent steam steriliser we'd been bought. Don't think they had the round discs though as I don't remember it being a problem. I had to buy another case though cos Avent were different shape and my bottle holders from Canada which I've never seen here -they strap on to pushchair and then top bit round bottle were no use either.0

thanks for all the replies :-)
yes i find the TT lids a nightmare to get off, and i have bought the TT breast pump which is absolutely useless, i spoke to a breastfeeding counsellor today who told me that i bought the worst pump! i'm going to get another pump tomorrow, she recommended avent but first i'm going to look into hiring an electric one from the NCT, i got the number for that today. she seemed to think you should be able to pump using one hand - not so with the TT pump!
i threw away the receipt for the bottles and the bin men came this morning so i don't suppose i can return the bottles. i've thrown away the packaging too. the numbers are still legible on some of them - the ones that came free in the steriliser and the one that came in the breastpump - it's the other 4 i sent my husband to buy when i realised i'd be bottlefeeding that have no writing on anymore.
i didn't realise i could use the TT teats with avent bottles, that would be good because roo seems to have such trouble with his tongue and the TT teats are the only ones he's managed so far. hopefully i can also use the discs. microwave bottles are a great idea but i also have a pump to sterilise 4-6 times a day so it makes sense to put the bottles in with it. i like the TT steriliser but will be getting avent bottles and probably the avent pump (where did i put my boots card?)
infacol seems to be making a big difference but he is still awake at night and still has some tummy pain but not as much as before the infacol. the health visitor thinks it is colic because it doesn't happen 24 hours a day, it starts early evening. spud was like it 24 hours a day, roo is only like it for 12 hours so it's more likely that it is colic with roo. she's keeping an eye on him though because he keeps getting a rash so he might be sensitive to the formula. he's started being sick today and his squeaky noises are getting worse,
i looked in asda yesterday for omneo comfort, i remember it being mentioned in a previous thread. it was £7.21 i think in asda. it says you need a higher teat flow because the milk is thicker, so at the weekend i will be buying medium teats and a tub of omneo comfort. i like the way the tub has a ledge for levelling off the scoop, very handy. it also says the colour and consistency of the dirty nappies will change - in what way? i was a bit wary of that! :rotfl:52% tight0
