I actually have to agree with him. A 16yo student is far more likely to be motivated in a supermarket than a 40yo with a phd in astrophysics or something. Would you not agree?

And managers would pick younger people, means less pay, more money for him/her!

No I would not agree. Generally if somebody has a PHD they won't be stacking shelves...

Also through experience 16 yr olds see it as bit of spare money, a job for holidays etc for older people it may be their sole income therefore incredibly important to their survival thus value it more and take it more seriously.

Just because its your sole income doesnt mean you try hard! Anyway... They're not all lazy. That’s not what I said. Some of them are stupid as well. No doubt some of them just made some bad choices and ended up there, whatever, I'm not ignorant for saying it, I've worked in a supermarket part-time for 4 years. It’s the younger ones who get picked for overtime if things actually need doing, its the young ones that work when its busy, its the younger ones who perform better. They have an IPM leader board (the number of items that the colleague scans on a till per minute) and there has never been anyone over 21 on there. When we did our training the older ones starting had to come in for an extra couple days to get "their heads round it all". The new inventory control system caused problems for anyone over 30 and still does, the young ones could teach the trainers how to do it after 5 minutes. The older people that work at a supermarket are either teenagers, 20-something managers or old dears upping their NI contributions for retirement. I'm telling you, that’s fact.

Its not fact at all you've simply comfirmed my ignorant comment .Its your opinion.
Also calling people stupid contributes alot to your argument doesnt it...

In my findings if its a sole income position a person values that income alot more therefore works for it.

However I'll still disagree with your findings on the IPM leaderboard as in my store its equally spread, as is overtime etc which I accept may be different yours but in no way should it makes you feel so superior to older people then insult them to call lazy and no stupid.

God you must be really old to get so offended. I dont feel so superior to anyone, old or young. You've got to admit though, that some old people have got about as much life as a dead donkey thats just been shot and then trampled on by a load of other donkeys. :T There are some very intellegent people that work in supermarkets, I have no doubt there'll be some wasted talents and some real grafters. What I have in effort the older ones make up for in experience and wisdom, they are genuinely nice people (most of them) and are great people socially. All I'm saying (against the comment that a 16 year old cannot perform the tasks that an older person can) is if you put a 16 year old against a 25 - 90 year old in a working environment then 99.9% of the time the young one would do more.

Talk to your manager and ask him about his job. I was sweeping the managers office the other day and he said to me "sorry about all the mess, its all the sitting down I've been doing" - he also jokes to me all the time about how he gets £30k a year to check that the tins of beans are pointing the right way! Hardly hard graft. Theres a man who works alongside me who has recenty retired and wanted a 'lazy job to pass the time' he's forever making comments that these people don't know what work is etc. The reason I work there is so I can work all the hours I want and not be too tired to study.

Also by the time you get older you 'settle' into a job and do not work as hard, you realise that you don't get paid more than anyone else no matter how much work you do, lets do the minimum and go home.

    Lets be friends.

I'm not trying to be argumentative here nor am I really old. I'm 18 and you've just posted on one of my threads about a uni course :p.

To be perfectly honest I agreee with some of your points there I just think calling people lazy and stupid is unfair and uncalled for.

Well from years of experience I think you will find laziness is down to the individual, and has nothing to do with age.
I work at a supermarket, with ages ranges from 17 to almost 65.
We have some hardworking, and some not as hardworking in both age groups.
But it is always the younger ones that don't turn in for shifts, are late, and ar consistently asking for weekends off to go "Out with thier mates"... hmmmm these people were taken on to do weekend hours!!

Personally I would employ over the age of 25, and those with families if I had the choice. I find these people are working to keep thier heads above water, to provide for thier families, and not to provide themselves witht the lastest fashion, mobile phone, or booze money.

Of course we all have our own opinions , and that is just mine.
