Hiya moneysavers.
My son is soon to finish mandatory schooling (June 08, age 16) and go back for A levels after summer holiday.
He'll quite happily bum around if i let him so i thought i'd try and sort him out!
Was thinking of a part time job during the holiday followed by weekends after that until Uni (if he makes it)!
Live in south birmingham. Anyone know any good places to work in terms of conditions, pay, employee offers etc?
Which supermarkets offer the best package?
Thanks.

Well I worked for Tesco from age 16. I found you could do your set say 12 hours a week plus there was loads of overtime available during the holidays. I found them to be generally supportive (but of course it varies from store to store) and shift swaps were a great way of getting exam days off and the like. Plus if you stick at it for a year you get the staff discount which you can use on the family shopping.0

If you only work part time (say 12 hrs) and then do extra hours, are the extra hours at OT rate or just standard pay rate until you have done over the number of hours of a full time employee?Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j

Unless its all changed in the last few months its normal rate until you reach the number of hours of a full time employee. Sundays are time and a half (regardless of overtime or normal hours).andrewmoorcroft wrote: »If you only work part time (say 12 hrs) and then do extra hours, are the extra hours at OT rate or just standard pay rate until you have done over the number of hours of a full time employee?0 -

Sainsburys used to give discount after 3 months. You get one discount card but 2 signatures on it - DS put me on it so I used it for weekly shop etc. He worked a basic 15 hours per week, but was paid unsocial hours for late nights."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0

Waitrose is an excellent employer and has great ethical policies and practices for farmers and suppliers, and everyone who works for them 'owns' the company. Might not be one in his area, but worth a look. They have great graduate programmes too.0

Yeh, Waitrose part of the John Lewis Partnership.
John Lewis pays more than Waitrose but same company really. If you work for a year you get a bonus of ~20% (my girlfriends monthly rate is abouot £250, and this month is getting around £1000 because of the bonus....). They pay extra for overtime and Sundays.
But obviously not everywhere has a waitrose or john lewis....
Also plenty of pay raises, if you work hard. My girlfriend started a year and half ago on £4.85 and now gets £6 something, which is pretty decent.0 -
Has he thought of a Saturday job at a library. Most libraries open for a few hours on Sunday as well now. When I worked at my local library the Saturday girls and boys got extra hours during the summer. It was also a good job to keep once they started at uni as it was flexible re hours.0
