Indeed it does. In fact, it's the ONLY way to maximise the (up to) 59 days interest free credit period offered by the card companies.

Not quite, there are at least three cards where payment can be made ON the due date and not using the DD sysytem.

    1. If you have a Lloyds credit card you can pay cash over the counter at a Lloyds branch ON the due date and not be penalised for it. Payment will be actioned immediately.

2.AMEX Platinum cards* - Payment can be made over the phone on the due date using a debit card. It will take two days for the payment to show on your online statement and your account to be adjusted, BUT it is backdated to the actual payment date.

    3. Exactly the same applies with Mint cards.

I still use these methods every month on the Lloyds/Mint cards and have never been penalised. AMEX*, I got fed up with so no longer use them (check first).
  • Thanks for these constructive replies, this is what I was looking for not sympathy by any means. Seems to me that some people on these forums just like having a go at people and being totally nasty instead of offering good advice.

    To paraphrase Oscar Wilde:
To lose one payment may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.

Thanks for that. Perhaps then, since providers' systems and processes could (and probably will) change over time, my post should have read...

"Indeed it does. In fact, it's the ONLY way to safely maximise the (up to) 59 days interest free credit period offered by the card companies."
    3. Exactly the same applies with Mint cards.
Is the same true, then, of the OP's NatWest card since both belong to the RBS group?

I'd be wary of using a DC to pay RBS CCs on the due date. For years this used to work quite well for my Lifeboats card but I was told last year by their CS that this was no longer possible and I risked being late if I tried it again. So now I pay by DC 3 working days before.

HSBC do the same for their credit cards if the money is coming from a HSBC current account and is paid/transferred to the credit card by internet banking or a HSBC cash machine.

  • Hi Jessielou

I would ring natwest and ask to log a complaint regarding the cheque payment because you had given it time and they clearly haven't taken this into account-the fact that you paid money in over the counter for the other payment, I used to work for natwest and they really should of explained that your payment is going to be late so really it looks like poor communication on that one.

I know it's a pain and i've just shouted at my partner (who is 11 years onler than me) as he has just had a late payment fee due to his inability to read his statement (lol) but evidently, you have not ignored the payment, you simply weren't aware of the timescales-just explain it to them and see if they will refund you due to your efforts-all you can do is ask

    good luck
Loan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!
All debt consolodated and cards destroyed!!
As D'Ream would sing 'Things.....can only get better'!!!

I've nothing to be weary about regarding the procedure and Mint cards. Four years experience without a single late payment charge and without a late payment being registered to the CCA's is proof enough to me !

As for lifeboat cards I can't comment as I've never had one, but one thing I do know is that I rarely believe what C/s agents tell me as once again experience tells me that they are the least knowledgable about their products and how payment systems work. If it makes you happy (it'll certainley make them happy) then continue to pay before you need to.

As I've indicated above I can't comment on the other cards within the RBS group as I don't have them. I don't want to give anyone a 'bum steer', but with Mint cards is certainley does work.

I'm content with knowing the system works for me, but it might not suit everyone. As you say the easiest and possibly the safeest way is to set up a DD.

PS. just how do you copy text from multiple posts without having to reply individually ?

OP allowed 6 or 7 working days. Cheques take 4 days to clear. A small Royal Mail delay could easily have created this problem. That said, it's worth a try. However, it may be unsuccessful due to a similar thing happening the very next month!

The "communication" was on the reverse of the statement under "how to make a payment". Even if it had been pointed out to the OP at branch, what good would it have done?...the payment would still have been late.
