  • Due to a marriage break up I ended up in financial diffuculty and head to rearrange loan payments for a period of time. I did everything by the book, wrote to all my creditors and agreed reduced payments. I kept to the arrangements, kept in touch and gradually increased my payments until now I am paying the full ammount of my loan agreements.

I was suprised when checking my credit record with Experian that I had a default notice placed against my Barclaycard loan despite never missing the payments, even though the starting ammounts were minimal due to my circumstances.

None of my other creditors who were in the same position placed a default notice, so I am not entirely convinced by Barclaycards exlanation of why this was done. I am really disappointed as upuntil now i had thought they had dealt with me really well and had been much more sypathetic than some of the other financial institutions (student loans especially).

I have been told by Barclaycard that they cannot lift the default notice and it will stay on my record until 2011. My problem is that I am now in a position to think about buying a house - but this will stand against me as my credit rating is shown as POOR - and in the current credit climate this will mean I will find it difficult to access the best deals in terms of interest rates.

    my questions are:

    1. should i use the savings built up for a deposit be used to pay off the outstanding amount on my barclaycard loan - even though this will mean I will need to start saving again.

    2. will paying off the loan help in terms of my credit rating, even if the default notice is still in place.

    3. is there any way of having the default notice lifted - Barclaycard say there isn't

    4. can I ask Barclaycard to write a note to go on my record to say that I kept to all my payments (even though they were reduced)

    5. who is the best person to speak to in Barclaycard - all I have is a telephone number for their call centre.

    regards

    hope you can help

In my opinion, if the barclaycard loan account is still active, and you are still paying it, then you did not default, and they are wrong.

However, be careful to check whether they marked you as having an arrangement, as that is what I would have expected, instead of a default.

According to Experian's help pages, a default is described as :
"The account is in default. You failed to keep to your credit agreement and have not responded satisfactorily to requests to put your account in order, so the credit agreement has ended. "

From your description, that is not the case.

You don't have to ask Barclaycard to add a note to your credit file; you can do that yourself. It is called a notice of correction, and would be a good idea in your case. Have a look at www.experian.co.uk in the consumer advice section.

Paying off the loan might help a bit, but not that much. A lender would be able to see that you have less outstanding debt, and might be willing to lend to you as a result, but until the default situation is cleared up it will not have much impact.
Karma is a wonderful thing. ;)

    Hello!

I'm looking to apply for a mortgage some time in the next 6 months or so, so want to make sure my credit score is reasonable.

I've got various credit accounts that I never use - overdrafts, old credit/store cards, catalogue accounts etc where I've just abused the intro offer and then never touched them again.

If I close these all down so I have less credit available to me, would that mean banks would be prepared to lend me more?
  • Hi,

I have an unused, no overdraft current account from halifax with a perfect record. I also have two other current accounts from different banks. Any opinions on whether closing the Halifax account would improve or hurt my rating??

    Thanks for your help!!
  • Hiya

Looking for some general advice about defaults/credit reports.
I'm due to make my last payment towards my trust deed on 8th April :j I've been checking my credit reports and have noticed that the accounts included within my trust deed (started in June 2002) are starting to drop off. but some of them have different default dates - July 2002, August 2002, November 2002 and July 2003.

When I am discharged from my trust deed is there any way I can have these dates changed to reflect the proper start date of my trust deed/defaults?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi,

around 6 months ago I took a training course to lead me into a new career, the plan was to do this and continue my current sales job on a commission only basis, suffice to say things did not work out and for 3 month I had very low income, ran up credit (on cards) and eventually missed 1 loan payment and had to get my credit card payments reduced.

I'm now back working full time and earning a good wage, and paying the minimum on my credit card (no longer on special arrangement) however due to the 3 month living on credit my total debt is now around 15k (I already had a loan) and my monthly repayments are around £500.00, which leaves me with about £75 a month spare after rent, bills, car tax etc.

I also changed bank accounts recently due to the treatment given to me as soon a I had problem by my existing bank HSBC who I had been with for 18 years , having never missed a payment, or been over my overdraft!

I was hoping to apply for a consolidation loan - over 7 years it would reduce my monthly payments to around £230 but I have been refused credit by my new bank due to the payment I missed. (even after having the loan with them for 4 years and never having missed a payment before, and I was only 2 days late with the payment)

Does anyone have any suggestions where I can get a loan? or any other suggestions?

my current apr on the credit card is 19% :)
my current apr on load is 6.4%
    I rent

    Thanks

  • Hello all.

I have a default with Capital One on my credit files and would like to know if there is a a way to remove it. Although i have outstanding loans and a low credit score, i'm trying to get my house in order and for some reason, this is the only default on my file. The debt was passed on to a DCL about 3 years ago but after contacting them, it is no longer in their hands and been passed on.

Is there any way to remove this from my file as i cannot trace who now owns the debt. It may have been written off for all i know but i'm a bit stuck. I'd happily pay it off to clear it as it's not a huge amount. Would writing to the Credit Agencies do me any good?

    Many thanks.
