Looks like your system is abit messy.

If you are getting duplicate entries in your device manager, this could be what is causing the slow speeds/problems.

I find that booting into safe mode, goto device mgr, click show hidden devices. Delete the entries with duplicates, and as you dont know which is the proper one delete both of them. But only do this for non-system devices (if they get messed up I reinstall XP) and non plug and play devices. You may have 2 or mroe entries in your monitors, all these can be deleted as XP will find it again on next boot.

All I can say is just go careful, if your not too sure just post back and someone (or me will get back to you)

As for your USB2.0 speeds, have you now tried going back into BIOS and enabling what you have just disabled?? Does the USB device dissaprear again?

If you have a P4 with Hyperthreading (HT) then it appears to have 2 processors.

I can start with the easy bit, yes i tried changing it back to enabled but it came back with the same error messge device malfuntioned and windows not recognised.

Now the hard part i tried to boot into safe mode but it wouldnt let me i even came back online to check it was f8 just incase i got it wrong i tried booting about 5 times still no joy so i had to go in via msconfig to set it for safe mode boot and i eventually got there and when i did what a mess - according to my pc i have 14 items logged to network adaptor, still 2 processors, 7 storage volumes/generic volume and under usb 9 - 2 generic hubs, s sis 7001 pci to usb open host controller, 2 usb mass storage devices and 2 usb root hub and 1 usb printing support:confused:

what i do actually have installed via usb is usb bluetooth (belkin), usb keyboard and mouse, combo hub reader and usb mass storage 1 of. I have a screenshot if that is anyhelp but dont know how to attatch but could email if required:confused:

:wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: Of course any help is very much appreciated;)

Excuse lack of knowledge but what is hyperthreading? i know the mobo is hyperthreading ready or compatible but apart from that i know nothing and these problems like double entries only came about once i had installed the combo hub reader for the first time and i know i only have one processor as i only paid for one:p ;)

In simplest terms it makes a hyperthreading aware operating system think that there are two processors. XP and 2003 are the only Microsoft operating systems which support hyperthreading.

The idea is that not all the parts in the processor are used all the time. Hyperthreading allows the operating system to run some processes in these spare parts. In practice it means that a hyperthreaded machine will handle running multiple applications at once better.

The easiest way to check if a system is using hyperthreading is to:
open Task Manager (CTRL -ALT-DELETE or right click on the task bar and select task manager).
    Select the performance tab.

If you have 2 CPU Usage History Graphs then the machine is processor supports hyperthreading or is a dual core processor (only available in the last month or so).
    e.g.

    http://slo-tech.com/slike/878.jpg

Generally most systems will only see one CPU Usage History Graph.

If you have far too much money you may see 4 CPU Usage History Graphs....

    Rather techy description.

 Its showing 2 windows cpu usage instead of one long one, i should only have one processor i checked the reciept and to be honest didnt know you could have more than one and got the machine built for me so no way was it ever mentioned and i doubt the shop would have added another.

What is going on with my pc:confused: PLEASE HELP

It's not a problem - it's an added feature of some Pentium 4's. Don't worry about it. All Prescott (the code name for the current processor design) support Hyperthreading.

If your really worried PM the details from the sticker on the side of the processor box. I can check it against the Intel database.

It is a p4 (supporting hyperthreading technology - taken from box) and here is the mobo which mentions hyperthreading, i just dont understand why this happening or what is making it happen and also how to fix this? Machine is only a few months old built for me 3 months ago so we are talking recent stock rather than a machine built and lying instore for months.

As I said earlier hyperthreading makes it appear as if you have 2 processors so that is normal.

Normally in device manager you should see a USB generic hub for each pair of USB connectors on the motherboard. External Hub may show up as 1 or more. Card readers may appear as a USB hub (some of them has a USB connector on the front) and the card reading slots often appear as USB mass storage devices.

Firewire controllers show up as network connections (1394 connection) so that may explain some.

What is the motherboard again. Will try and help where I ASAP but I'm very busy at the moment.
