Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> 'Hardware' Tab -> Device Manager

Do you see anything regarding 'USB hub' there with a yellow icon? If so, right click on it and choose 'uninstall' (since it isnt working anyway).

Then go back to Control Panel, and select 'Add Hardware' and with any luck it will find the USB devices and they might work again.

It could be it's drawing too much power (though I would have thought it unlikely).

Are you using a laptop? These can have problems with supplying power - on my laptop I have to connect my external hard drive using two USB ports (the cable has one connection to the hard drive, and splits off into two connections to plug into the USB ports) this way the hard drive gets enough power. If I try connecting it using one port then the drive doesnt get enough power to start properly, so XP doesnt recognise it.
You shouldn't have a problem with power levels if you are using a desktop computer (it should be able to supply the required power through one USB port), or if the hard drive (or other USB device) is externally powered (which would explain why your printer works).

I'm going to get an externally powered USB port to try and get around this for my laptop.

    Hope this helps.

Even on desktops there is a limit to how much power (current really) can be provided through the ports. Because of the way USB is done two ports tend to share the same power source.

I tried that and there is no yellow ? or icon against anything i just seem to have lost the usb2 as everything usb1 works and this only came about after i had installed the combo hub and reader, the hard drive was fine till i unplugged it and tried it in the hub and now even trying it back in the usb slot it was in it isnt recognised:confused:

PS i allready have 6 usb ports which are full hence getting the hub and card reader all in one and its a main pc not a laptop if thats any help?

    Hi gk172,

USB problems........urg! Firstly what motherboard is it? If I know that I know what chipset it uses, then I can loot into a solution for all you USB problems.

    Also,
-you have tried plugging just one device in at a time?
-In BIOS you should have an option to enable/disable USB2.0, is it enabled or disabled? Try to set it to the opposite of what it is now and reboot.

I may not be able to reply straight away as my super brilliant girlfriend has just given birth to my most brilliant daughter. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Also noticed yesterday that i now have 2 processors installed:confused: i tried going into device manager which showed 2 and tried uninstalling one but it just came back, and i see on boot up 2 processors one with a star so now im really confused as to whats gone on.

And i dont have usb2 speeds either, just tried transfering to my micro zen and its very slow telling me this can run faster and showing available ports but they should all be usb2.
