We have spoke to the AA. They have said to send letter.
Bank have said we must pay charges or will accumulate interest. Then claim it back from AA.
I am having chemotherapy at the moment and things like this take energy that is not there. all because the AA took money when they were asked not too. I realise now, the important thing is stop DD with bank then money 'should not' be taken.

Well, the thing is there is no direct debit to cancel.

In my case I did not agree to any direct debits, my bank didn't have any direct debit authorisations for the AA membership renewal - the AA just kept my debit card details and then just charged it 12 months later.

Which reminds me, I should follow up on my official written complaint to AA - sent it over a month ago, yet to hear back from the AA crooks.

They don't tend to do DD as these are easy to cancel direct by the customer so they use what is known as "a continuous card authority". Even if you close the account the debit card is linked to the payment may still go through with the bank then sending you the bill, these can prove very hard to cancel although legally the bank must do so if you request it as the law was changed a few years a go but banks are still failing to adopt this policy fully- I believe Barclays are the main offender for this on a programme I heard recently on Radio 4.

  • Last year I bought AA membership from a roadside AA Van where they charged me a ridiculous amount.

When I went home I discovered that I have been sold roadside service very expensive compare to what is available online. So I called AA customer service to get full refund or get my policy upgraded to the rate which was offered online.

They refused to do that even if I was within the 14 days colling off period because apparently according to AA any thing you buy from any off their roadside van doesnot come with cooling off period.

I got furious so I asked them to cancel my policy and I bought new policy for RAC.

This year I have my policy renew with RAC as they wrote to me and gave me all the detail I needed to renew and the rest.

However I was checking my credit card I have found that AA have taken the money for the policy renewal for a policy which I had cancelled last year.

They never wrote to me or nothing along those line. From my past experience I know that they won't refund your money no matter what you do.

Can anyone advise what to do and how to get my money back from this thiefs.

    Any advise is welcome.

    Regards

    Can

IMHO, the best option is to ring your bank and report unauthorised transaction, and they will refund your £.

I had a similar situation with the AA a couple of years ago, and when I complained their defence was that they (conveniently) never received my cancellation phone call/letter (not that I had anything to cancel, renewal paperwork never received, didn't want/need their roadside cover). And they also sent me a 3 page letter telling me that I was in the wrong, not them, and that they were right to take money from my bank account for EU breakdown cover that I didn't need.

They are just a bunch of cowboys when it comes to £££.

I'm well before my renewal date today but you can't get through to the cancellation dept. When you select that option you get some nonsense message saying they are busy with breakdown calls which tells you to try later and then hangs up.

Ring back and select that you want to renew and they answer! Unprofessional and unethical practices. The renewals dept couldn't do the cancellation and also failed to put me through to the correct department because they aren't answering. Now they are supposed to be ringing back within 48 hours.

So AA Company Representative, why is it that you make people call a number to cancel that you don't have staff answering when other lines you do?

If you pay by direct debit and use internet banking, can't you just cancel the direct debit on line?
  • Timmo, I have exactly the same problem now. I signed up with them 2 years ago when It cost me £12 including the cashback. The following year, August 2012 I received a letter but I was in the middle of a difficult personal situation and could not reply and cancel, they increased it to £43 so I just accepted it (I can imagine this happens to many people and that's how they make a lot of profit). Now I have received exactly the same letter where it goes up to £62 for the same silver membership. I do not wish to go ahead plus the last time they helped me it took them 2 hours to arrive at my location. I am in a position now where I can take the time to try and cancel. I say 'try' cause I have been trying many times and they won't pick up the phone plus it costs me money from my mobile phone, and when you manage to speak with any other department they are just unable to help and they tell you that someone will call you, which never happens!!! I would like to get this sorted before the 8th that's when they will take the payment from my account. Never ever with AA again!!!

The AA are just unbelievable - take a look at their Facebook page and read the customer comments.
So I called the AA today to tell them it was way too much. I pressed option 2 (Thinking of leaving us). I was told that all operators were busy with an unusually high number of breakdowns. Please call back later and the line went dead. So I called straight back and pressed option 1 ( (Thinking of renewing?). Strangely the phone was answered in about three microseconds!! So I told them I was leaving. But then I stayed, because they were nice to me.
