Home-made washing powder

I added this to a thread on borax/soda crystals, but had little response, so thought I'd start a new thread. Mods, if there's a thread that answers my questions, please merge, but I couldn't find anything!

I'm very, very interested in giving Rhonda Jean's homemade washing powder recipe a go, but have a couple of questions for you afficionados:-

Does this mix have any effect on washing machines? Does it get cloggy?
What effect does the hardness of the water have on it?
I read somewhere that using soapflakes on their own makes nappies and towels lose their absorbency, does the addition of the soda crystals get rid of this effect?

Hope someone can help!

    Hi
I made up a large batch of Rhonda's laundry powder, getting all the items from Wilko's, which ended it costing me £4. If you only use 2 tablespoons per wash, like Rhonda suggests, this would make 100 washes.

I was abit worried about the quality of it though, so as I had a 30wash box of Persil in my cupboard, I mixed the two together. I now only use 2 tablespoons per wash and everything is coming out great. I could'nt tell the difference if I tried.

I also diluted my Concentrated fabric conditioner 50:50 with water and not noticed any difference.

I can't see how using soap to wash nappies and towels makes them lose absorbancy - it doesn't make sense to me.

When my current soap powders run out I'm thinking of trying RJ's mix. I'm interested to see what folks say about it. Can't remember off hand if she does a liquid - I'm starting to prefer this as it is good for all temperatures.

    Is that laundry gloop?

I've never heard of soap flakes doing this. It's fabric conditioner that stops towels being absorbent.

I've been using this type of recipe for ages, machine and clothes fine- daughters funny skin fine with it too. The recipe I use is 1 part soda crystals, 1 part borax and two parts soap flakes. Never use fabric conditioner either just use white vinegar.
    Give it a go :D

Yes, that's the one, Concentrated Laundry Powder, on Rhonda Jean's blog.

I never use fabric conditioner, does the vinegar really work? How's the smell?

  • Vinegar works really well as a fabric softener, especially on towels - it makes them soft and fluffy and absorbant again! You really do notice what a build up of laundry products they had on them before once you try vinegar. The smell dissipates upon drying leaving no scent at all, but you could always mix it with a little Lavender oil if you wanted to scent your laundry.

I seem to have collected a large amount of Dove soap(don't ask why!!!)-could I use that to make washing powder?
