  • So if i was in one of these with my kids.. and i got hit at 70mph buy a lorry or van, it would survive the crash,,
    would it?

I'm sorry to tell you that if you're in any vehicle and are hit at 70mph the odds are that you'll either be seriously injured, or die.

If you're concerned about road safety, take an advanced course from the IAM or ROSPA. Avoid the accident altogether rather than mitigating the severity of it.

    Please answer one question

    - do you believe that it would be a good thing to reduce CO2 omissions from road vehicles

If you answer no - you're obviously entitled to that opinion, but it's obviously pointless debating this issue. You're obviously going to dislike the car tax increase and will see no reason for it.

If yes - then we can discuss whether the car tax increases are going to achieve anything.

    I have a pre-2001 Rover diesel - currently paying £185.
If I replace it with something similar (say a Ford Focus) that will go down to £120. I find it difficult to imagine what sort of monster vehicle will pay £400! Even something hefty like a Mondeo estate is only £145.

Cutting CO2 emissions is theoretically a good idea, but there is no definite proof that it will achieve the goals so many claim. Many people have strong views on climate change but, on a public forum like this, many are going to be adopting views they have simply heard elsewhere and liked. Im afraid that the public is just not sufficiently analytically minded to make a good judgement on their own. Coming from within the scientific community, I am no willing to hang myself siding either way but, even amongst experts, there is little considered to be certain.

In any case, we already have incentive not to drive dirty cars, we pay more tax on fuel than most of the rest of the world. If tax must be added, that is where it should go. Taxation like that discussed does not consider the most important feature of CO2 production; mileage. I could do 1000 miles a year in my porsche and will polluste only a fraction as much as someone doing 12k in their diesel mondeo. Yet it will cost me 3 times as much to tax it.

I am just fed up with working hard and having nothing to show. I earn a good salary but the 'miracle economy' precludes me from buying a house. So I cant buy a house, I'll enjoy my money by getting a nice car.... oh, hold on, Im not allowed to do that either. What the hell am I doing all this work for!? All Im allowed to do is save my money for the future.... but hold on again, we have a government who is pouring my money down the drain as a result of the inflation (which they do their best to hide) they have carelessly led us into! You cant win! You cant be sensible because it costs too much, you cant have fun because it costs too much, all you can do is work and line the pockets of an incompetent, corrupt bunch of jackasses.
    2 + 2 = 4
except for the general public when it can mean whatever they want it to.

Best way seems to be to buy old cars on the old tax system. Above 1.6 I think it's £185 tax, be below £120. Go for the biggest most polluting car and you'll only pay £185 plus you'll save loads on the purchase price.

But it is a load of b*ll*cks. Taxation for the good of the environment? If so why is the money not being earmarked for public transport and environmental issues - instead it's going to fill a financial black hole due to mismanagement of the economy and to drop bombs in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Again everything is working to the advantage of rich people, and not middle Britain. Luckily it's going to be middle Britain voting Mr Bean out I hope.

Absolutely. Nothing about the extra taxation being used to upgrade public transport or to invest in green technologies. People aren't being given any alternative to using their cars, just penalised for doing so.

your right here anewman, its got f**k all to do with the environment, the countries books dont balance so we have to pay for it,not the thousands of MP'S who get 22k to spend on thier second homes.

Sure, none of us here are experts (me included). But amongst people who should know - there is virtually 100% certainty that CO2 emissions have a lot to do with climate change.

However - fuel tax seems not to have done the trick as far as changing people's car buying or driving habits are concerned. The car tax may just make people think that they might get the 2 litre instead of 3 litre model.

Bit of a rant there I think. Can we get back on topic? If we are going to look at it purely from a personal point of view - the changes will save me at least £50 a year, as soon as my old car falls apart and I need to replace it.

I'm going to make myself even more unpopular by saying most MPs do work pretty hard - and since they have to live in London and run a home back in the constituency I can see the justification for the allowance - which is hardly news anyway, it's been in existence for decades.
  • Soon we wont have cars... It will be rich people with all the cars.. and us working class with be stuck with smelly buses

You'd be lucky to come across a bus where I live!

Ok I could get to work but would only be able to actually work for about 4 hours of my 9 hour day the rest of time would be spent travelling on the lovely buses, between lots of different villages!
  • I too think MP's work hard.

It must be exhausting grovelling deep in the trough trying to extract as much as you can from the country's coffers before your even more greedy mates can hoover it all up.

Another nail in the downward spiralling coffin of this once great country, and we'll just pay up.

Difficult times coming folks, don't whatever you do raise your head above the parapet and complain, or the UK plc version of the stasi will soon beat the living daylights out of you, remember the countryside alliance protesters being beaten by our political police a couple of years ago.

Rant over, back on the subject of road tax, what did you expect from the working persons party, get them working class people back where they belong, on a bike or send them to the tender mercies of the feral yoofs that can be found patiently waiting for another defencless victim to board the bus.
