Am I right in thinking that when my son turns 16 and leaves school he wont get any money from DWP?
(Sorry for my ignorance, but when I left school at 16 I went straight on the dole so I could give the money to my mother for rent etc once I got a YTS I gave her the money and everytime a YTS finished I got my dole again)
My son says he has no intention of sitting any exams or of getting a job, but when he leaves school we will lose his child benefit and child tax credits.
Has 'dole' stopped for school leavers?
I'm facing possible redundancy so the loss of his child benefit will be a blow, especially as he wont be bringing any money in.
He seems to think he'll get IB, but I think he's wrong? As long as he lives with me I don't think he'll get anything?

He won't get IB as he will not have paid any NIC, but if he's sick he could claim IS- but he'll be before a 'DWP doctor' before he knows it!.0 -

You're thinking wrong......I've posted a thread about my impending redundancy and asked how much I'd get with two teenagers etc
I didn't know if my son would get any money when he turns 16 and that's why I asked, as Child Benefit stops for him and money is going to be tight if he wont work.
Looks like he'll have a wake up call when he goes to sign on then? It might just force him to look for work (I hope so)
Thanks for the sensible answer............ I did in fact meant Income Support and not Incpacity Benefit  It was all called 'dole' back in my day and you just got it from School, seems a lot has changed and I'm not looking forward to living off benefits if I dont get a job, it's a minefield of different benefits now.....

He sounds like a delight.
There's a huge difference between can't work and won't work.0 -

Tell me about it............. and I can't sling him out because of his age and he can't go and live with his Dad at the moment, so I'm stuck with him until he's 18 or he can live with his Dad (another one who wont work)
Tell you something, this forum has opened my eyes to how the system has changed. It's amazing the different benefits, I made the mistake of looking at the DWP website and I'm more confused than ever. I think a trip into town to the CAB might be in order to see how I stand.0 -

Well i'm sorry then. But I'm amazed you posted such a thing.
DO NOT help him sit around on the dole. Make him get out & get to work.
Tell him education, work or find somewhere else to live. I honestly weouldn't dream of aiding him to go on the dole if he were my son.0 -
