My mob cannot be unlocked?!

T-mobile have tried and failed to unlock my nokia 5300. They say that some phones can't be unlocked. So, I either have to stay with T-mobile or dump my much-loved music phone; that can't be right? Are they acting legally? I reasonably assumed that at the end of my contract (now), I had the right to move to another provider with my phone. Can anyone help please?

You want t-mobile, at there cost, to unlock your mobile so you can move networks! You're being unreasonable (and wrong) in your assumption. Take it to an unlocker or buy a code on Ebay. Search for BB5 Unlocking

I don't see why the Nokia can't be unlocked, they are usually the easiest to do?
Look into whether it's the sort you can do yourself with a calculator (older nokias) otherwise t-mobile should do it but you usually have to pay and have been with them a certain length of time, the stickies at the top should tell you how your model is able to be unlocked.

I don't think the op is being unreasonable at all, they just want to know whether t-mobile are telling the truth re their phone and if it's possible to move networks, which I think is a reasonable request seeing as their contract is up. It's up to t-mobile if they want to ask for a payment or not.

Some t-mobile phones will work with a Virgin sim, but not all (had experience with both) so it's worth trying (on the same note, some but not all o2 payg phones are also unlocked, as was my w580i which was bought brand new from phones 4 u)

My OH got to the end of his 18 months with T Mobile and they unlocked his phone after he'd asked for his PAC code and they'd shown no interest in keeping him as a customer. They first wanted £30 but after calling back a few times, they did it for a fiver in the end. I would call back until you get someone helpful. They will have to send off for the unlock code - OH got his in the post within a week. Good luck.

According to the T-Mobile info system (I have no idea from a technical point of view if this is correct) certain Nokias will not unlock and Nokia provide no reason for this - all T-Mobile can do is refund you for the subsidy pin. I assume T-Mobile provided you with a subsidy pin, it just failed to work? Then they are not refusing to unlock your phone, it's just that they physically cannot do it. If you still have a note of the subsidy pin then you could contact Nokia and see if they can give you any pointers.
I accept no liability if you chose to rely on my advice.

Nokia are definitely not the easiest phones to unlock. All networks seem to have problems in getting unlock codes from Nokia for any of their new phones. We've been have loads of problems in getting unlock codes from Nokia for about 2 years.
The easiest phones I've found to unlock are Sony Ericssons and Samsungs.

Look at the unlocking BB5 nokia thread - there are lots of models that fail to unlock with codes and some that you can't do with cable. That's tough really. I got rid of my 6120 on 3 for this reason.

There are people on eBay that claim to be able to do phones like this, but some of the newer models get permanently locked after a few tries...

    This is complete rubbish.
You have the right to have your mobile unlocked after your minimum contract term, but the provider can charge an admin fee.

If T-Mobile have been stupid enough provide handsets that they cannot unlock, and haven't told you when you signed up, then that is their problem. You require a unlocked Nokia 5300, one way or another.

    What is complete rubbish

Show me where, in the OPs contract (or even a standard t-mobile contract), that it states t-mobile will supply you with an unlocked phone after your contract ends.

Maybe you want them to debrand it, and also supply you with a new cover as the one you have has a t-mobile logo on it.

You have the right to unlock your phone (No-one has ever suggested otherwise on this thread:confused:), but its up to you to do it. Whether t-mobile will, or can, provide that service is another matter altogether as it doesn't form part of the contract.

If the original poster wants an unlocked 5300, and t-mobile can't do it, then he needs to find someone who can. (unless of course you would like to point out where in the contract t-mobile have said they would unlock it for him - which of course you can't do)

Theres lots of shops with the boxes to unlock this phone.

I bought one brand new payg mobile N73 but it is locked on t-mobile. I want to call t-mobile for unlocking code. However, i am not sure if they will do that because i have never used any t-mobile sim card and this is a new payg phone. Some phone shops may unlock it, but the unlocking fee is not reasonable.
    Any advice? Thanks
