    In case some person with little knowledge read through the thread, old as it is and thought, wrongly, that you could stenghten rafters by adding material to them or putting others at right angles to them. Particularly, as this thread has been, as you say, available since 2005 and nobody else has picked up on this potentailly dangerous assumption.

    You can strengthen rafters (and joists) by adding material to them.

    Sorry, yes you can strengthen joists ( dislexia rules KO) by adding material to them, but not by very much, it is extemely difficult to work out the by how much (ie beyongd the scope of an engineering degree) and it is not accepted by building regs.
