Loft Flooring

  • Would I really need to make the hatch bigger or is that just for the ladder?

I was definitely planning to screw the boards down in case I ever need to lift any of them for access.

depend's on whether you can get the stuff in the loft and some ladder's and how often your going to be going into it...I am lucky I have an over sized loft hatch...if you can get in and out it's up to you...:D

I got conflicting advice on this from different joiners, but I decided to strengthen mine by screwing and gluing wood strips of the same width of the joists and put them on top, (I cant remember the height exactly but think it was around 2-3") this was not just to strengthen but to lift it above the insulation and leave a space above it for air movement.

As a footnote B&Q do 8x2 boards as well as the small ones, if you want to use the bigger boards and the loft door is to small it's not usually a hard job making the door bigger (this depend on the space between the joist of course) I made mine bigger fitted new door etc in a hour or so
  • I know zip about DIY but I need to board a loft for storage only. I've heard of some boards that simply slot together.

Could anyone tell me where to buy the best ones and how I go about it (remember I'm starting from point zero). A big ask but I can't afford to hire someone to do it as I'm currently out of work (so I have the time at least).

Any help would be gratefully accepted

    Many thanks

    Welcome, Paul.

Did you read any of the previous posts?

You can buy 8x2 t&g boards from B&Q or Wickes or timber merchants.
    Compare prices.

They will "simply slot together", but you must screw them down too.
  • I done my loft last month. If your celing joists are 3x2 then you need to strenthen them with either 3x2 or 4x2 running opposite to the original ones.
i used 18mm mdf board from b&q as the flooring and got B&q to cut them down to 2ft by 8ft to get them into the attic (you get 2 free cuts at b&q) The bloke that cut mine put 3 boards at a time on the saw so i had 6 sheets cut for free

We didn't actually floor ours to use for storage, but we put up about 3 or 4 really big boards, they're about 2.4mx70cm maybe. We just dotted them about where we could, we have a lot of conduit, wiring, piping up the loft and it runs over the joists so we would have to build them up before flooring properly, so we just put the boards down where we could. We rarely go up there anyway.

Also just added extra insulation - homebase 2/1 offer and it only cost £60!

Hi I increased the depth of my joists to allow for a greater depth of insulaton, but screwing and/or gluing wood strips ontop of joists does not noticably increase the strength of the joist.
