my other half put flooring in our loft last year.
we got chipboard " toungue and groove" from B+Q.
it was about £3.99 for a pack of 3 boards( to cover 1 metre sq approx).

be aware they are quite heavy to put in the trolley
    load into the car
    get in the house
carry up the ladder into the loft........

If there is a Wickes near you then shop there for the boards, they work out cheaper.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Better still go to a local wood merchant and get some bigger boards, most places sell 8 x 2 which will get the job done quicker but can be awkward to handle so depends how big your loft is I suppose.

Even if you cut it down to 4 x 2 its still better to work with than the b and q crap.

Echo gogsboy's comment.....B&Q are expensive compared to the timber yard....another alternative (although they seem to be gettiong expensive now) is Screwfix....and they deliver! :D

I expect I'm being thick, but I've looked on screwfix and can't find any loft boards anywhere. Can someone give me a link please. Thanks.

I dont think Screwfix do loft boards anymore, call your local timber yard and see what they have, probably find it will be 8 x 2 boards, probably coming in at around £4-5 per board or thereabouts

If you can get these up the hatch and man handle them ok then it will save you a lot of time, the b & q boards are very small, very easy to work with but also time consuming if you have any sort of space to cover
  • Hi,
I'm looking at boarding my attic for extra storage space and wondering the best way to go about it for as cheap as possible, and whether anything has changed since these posts were made?

I only have a small hatch to get up into the loft (probably about 40cm2) so that would limit the size of the boards to go up there, and also I guess the type of ladder that I could setup for the hatch?

If I was just to get boards from the local timber yard, then presumably I'd cut them off so that they lined up with the joists?
  • Make sure you drill and screw them down, don't try and nail them. I know someone that nailed them once and it damaged all the plaster underneath.
  • looking to do this myself think I'll give my local saw mill a ring thanks everyone for your comments as was gonna go to b & q but saw mill it is then and drill and screws to...:D

In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of.
