The MSE European Referendum: what'd be your vote on the Lisbon Treaty?
Last week in parliament there was a major spat about whether to have a referendum either on the new European Lisbon Treaty (which replaced the constitution) or even on Britain in Europe itself.
As the decision was 'no referendum', I thought it'd be fun to see what MoneySavers think.
Which is closest to your view?
A. FOR the Lisbon Treaty. If there was a referendum I'd vote for it. 13% (520 votes)
B. AGAINST the Lisbon Treaty. If there was a referendum I'd vote against it. 70% (2725 votes)
C. POLITICIANS SHOULD DECIDE. It's too complex, no referendum, let them decide. 8% (312 votes)
D. DON'T KNOW. I don't have a view; it's all too much. 9% (336 votes)
Voting has now closed, but you can still click 'post reply' to discuss below. Thanks

When the treaty was ratified, the Portugese trade union federation stressed that the treaty will increase the numbers working across Europe without contracts, rights, pensions and paid holidays.
In this country, Unison general secretary has called the treaty "a borderless blueprint for privatisation".
The treaty also commits all EU members to "undertake progressively to improve their military capabilities".
So more arms spending, less public services and poorer working conditions? No thanks.0 -
I vote against the treaty AND to leave the EU AND to nuke France.
That'll learn 'emI wonder why it is, that young men are always cautioned against bad girls. Anyone can handle a bad girl. It's the good girls men should be warned against.-David Niven0 -

... AND to bring back hanging and flogging, AND to shoot all single mothers, AND to build a 500 foot wall around the country, AND to outlaw any dealings with filthy foreigners... oh, er, um... except to allow totally free flights to take advantage of their booze and sunshine, providing I don't have to learn any of their language.. etc etc etc
It doesn't learn 'em' or anyone else, actually.0 -

Crikey Charlton, thats a bit extreme. You wanna join the the Cameron revolution mate and be a caring and compassionate tory.
All that old school vitriol ain't gonna win votes.I wonder why it is, that young men are always cautioned against bad girls. Anyone can handle a bad girl. It's the good girls men should be warned against.-David Niven0 -
On the Question Time programme last week, Marcus Brigstocke asked the audience for a show of hands of how many wanted a referendum on the treaty.
About 15 to 20 %
Then he said out of those, keep your hands up if you've read and understood the treaty.
No hands at all0 -
I personally believe that the UK should TOTALLY withdraw from the EU, and stand on its own.
Keep the trade open with Europe yes by all means, but do certain things to make sure people do not take advantage of the country.
Those with a 2 year or more prison sentance - send them to labour camps / chain gang them like in the US.
Those who wish to come into the country with no english, and little working skills, they can spend 2 years working in coal mines (earning a living, not doing it for nothing), and earn their way into the country.
Death penalty should be bought back in, but no hanging, no lethal injection, just a gun, and a bullet. God I sound like a right little hitler, but hell, I only want to see the country become strong again.- Total Debt :£190,000 - Mortgage
- Owed: £9000 Virgin Atlantic American Express
- Owed: £9000 Tesco Clubcard Mastercard
- Owed: £5500 Barclaycard Platinum
- Owed: £1800 - Car Payments
- Debt Free Date : May 2050

Exactly. "Don't know" got my vote. And it will continue to do so until I read it (which means I read it, not take the word of our friends in Fleet St).I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -

Those who can, teach...
GGThere are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.0 -

I have read the Treaty, from cover to cover, for my job. Is it confusing? Not really, but you do need to have a copy of the old Treaties with you because a lot of it is along the lines of "In Article 17, delete the first two sentences, move the third paragraph before the second, and add this text:" etc.
If you can't be bothered with that, and want to read a document which shows what all these changes produce, then read this (produced by the Foreign Office): http://www.fco.gov.uk/Files/kfile/FCO_PDF_CM7310_ConsolidatedTreaties.pdf
(Just to add that I don't work for the government or a political party.)0
