I remember having friends at school in the late 70's and early 80's and being astounded at hearing their parent's were on a monthly salary!!! As a one parent family we lived pretty much hand to mouth on the small wage my mum earned and friday nights were very special as that when she got paid and we could have a little treat of chips from the van
I just couldn't get my head around the fact they could make money last the whole month (of course, they were probably on 10 times more money than mum)
Being so short of money there were loads of things we went without and most of the things that have already been mentioned on this thread seemed an impossible aspiration. The one thing that does really stick in my mind though is Woodley Green Apple shampoo - we often had to wash our hair in washing up liquid as even cheapie shampoo was a luxury and I was always so envious of any friends that had a bottle of Woodley Green Apple in their bathroom. I haven't seen it for years and years mind but would love to see if it still smells as wonderful as I remember it0 -
Washing my hair once a week on a sunday night so it was clean for school. Head in the kitchen sink and using vosene and no conditioner.
Now i have to wash my hair 2/3 times a week.
As a child I only ever once went on a family holiday due to my dad being a farmer. we had days out. And I went on guide camp a couple of times.
Until may 04 the furthest south I had been was isle of wight, east was London, North was Alton towers ( i know it is not really that north) and west was Portmeirion.
So for my first non-british holiday and first flight ever on a plane we went about 20,000 miles to OZ

We had the first colour tv in our street! My dad was a salesman for phillips office equipment and he won it in a sales promotion. We had to have a man come and install it, the first thing that came up was a "Roadrunner" cartoon, my sister and I were amazed, the only colour cartoons we had seen were at the cinema!, all our neighbours came in for a look, but a lot of programmes were still being braodcast in black and white, it actually stated in the TV guide "in colour"! My kids think I'm sooooo old!!!I Believe in saving money!!!:T

My sister used to treat me and her to a bottle of v05 green apple shampoo if she felt flush.
Me and mum used to go to the library every week and sit there reading until it shut. On the way home we would share a bag of chips. Did not know for years that we did this as it was cheaper than heating the house! The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0 -
