We always had a telephone because my dad was a policeman but I can remember being quite shocked that some of my friends didn't have a phone or car!
At my senior school the girls were allowed to wear a blue gingham blouse without a tie in the summer, I was so jealous of them because my mam wouldn't buy me one. Also computers weren't commonplace then, we did have 3 in the school library but you had to take "computer studies" to use them, I didn't touch a computer until I was in my early 30's.
I can remember thinking we were at the cutting edge of technology when the typing class got 2 new electric typewriters, I wasn't allowed to use them though because I wasn't good enough so I had to make do with the manual ones.Dum Spiro Spero0 -
OMG We had the phone put in around 78 too!! I was 13 at the time and it was a huge thing to happen to us.
Getting the first colour telly, I remember having a black and white one for years.
And years of misery having to wear coloured socks to school as white ones got dirty quickly and needed replacing more
Washing machines - my mum used a twin tub or the launderette for years. She only got her first automatic a few years ago and she is 70.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I always thought that people who drank pasteurised milk were posh! - we only ever had sterilised milk, can't stand the stuff now. I also thought my friend was posh because she had a pair of roller skates all to herself, where I had to share mine with two sisters, so only ever had one skate at a time. My mate also had a bike that came from a bike shop, my dad got ours from the local scrap yard and did them up for us, however I got my revenge on my posh friend when we swapped bikes as kids do, cos mine didn't have any brakes, I had to pedal backwards to stop and of course she didn't know this!!0

corn on the cob

We always had a phone as my dad ran a business, but we had a B&W telly until I was 13 (only got it when I was 2)
Car - we had a 3 ton lorry
shop bought clothes
skateboards (we had a pair of old roller skates dismantled and screwed to a board - they wouldn't turn corners either

Hey - I went to a posh grammar school and most of our sewing machines when I was 11 were still the old treadle types!! You were lucky if you bagsied the leccy ones.0 -

Yeah but we had some great times too. I remember my dad making me a go-cart from a plank, some bits of wood and pram wheels. I can remember everyone being envious because my dad was an engineer and my cart had steering and brakes
My Dad made my dolls house from scratch and I can even remember him hand painting the ivy up the walls and the roses around the door. My bike was second hand but dad rubbed it right down and painted it to look like new.
We lived on a council estate and thanks to Dad's ingenuity I always felt like one of the richest kids on the blockOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

I used to envy the girl next door. She was an only child and all her clothes were bought new from the shops. Mine were made by my mother, cast off from cousins or came from the jumble sale. She had two fluffy twin sets , one pink and one blue.
If I went round there for tea we used to have cake from the bakers. I used to love that - my mother always made all our cakes. It's funny how our attitudes change, I wouldn't dream of feeding my family bought cake now.
We wore the gingham frocks for school too. We could choose between blue or yellow- the only choice we had when it came to school uniform. We had to wear berets in the winter and straw boaters in the summer and TWO pairs of knickers-one white and one navy!0 -
