I cancelled a contract with Worcester Bosch for an annual service plus repairs. It cost £220 annually and they were either late or didn't show up four times in a row, and I had to take a full day off work each time.

Found a friendly local plumber (I'm in London) who'll do an annual service for £80 and will arrive in a one-hour slot...

    Cancelled WB.

Also, last year my washing machine broke and the cheapest way to get it fixed was to sign up to a £14.99 a month Domestic and General insurance scheme for a year, which is included the price of the repair (which would have been £125) and a replacement machine if they couldn't fix it.

It did the job, I just checked and exactly a year has passed so I have cancelled the agreement. They said I could take it up again if something else goes wrong. So one quick call and I am £179.88 up a year. :)

If you've read the Cancel Direct Debits article and managed to save some cash by examining your bank statements.................

Almost sound advice! dont stop there! Direct debits can be monthly ,Quarterley Yearly, so dont always show on a Monthly statement, if online you can check ALL outgoings, if you arent, telephone your Bank asking for a full list of DD's and Standing Orders from your account, then you can be almost certain not to miss any.
I have been doing this for years since 1984 when I set up my first computerused spreadsheet (On the Amiga!! Wow) .I recently Checked my Sister Inlaws Accounts, 3 mob phone insurance contracts she'd forgot about, 3 household Maintenance contracts she never new she had, and not needed.Gym membership still running when she'd moved years previously, we reckon weve' saved over £1000 by cleaning out these long unused forgotten DD'S etc, not to mention changing Gas Electric House, Car Insurance, Mob contract,Phone package, she's never been so well off.

  • When I cancelled my Multi-room subscription with Sky last year, they persuaded me to take out a Sky+HD subscription as it was on offer for £2.50/month for 12 months(then would revert to the full price of £10.50/month) I signed up for this, and so last week, when the offer was due to end I rang to cancel. I was then informed that if I continued with Sky+HD, they would extend the offer for a further 6 months and reduce it to £1.99/month! How could I refuse!(wonder if they will offer it for free when i call back in 6 months?)
  • Hi, I have just reviewed my partners bank statements and have found he's been paying £4.99 a month since 2005 as a standing order to an account in Lloyds . We have the account number and sort code and on his statement is listed as p payments with his phone number. Lloyds say they cannot tell us who this account is with . I wandered if anyone has any advice on how we can find out who / to reclaim if possible.

    Thanks !

If it's a standing order you can cancel it yourself. Whoever the money is going to will soon contact you.

Who does your partner bank with ? He should contact them, not Lloyds.

Netflix - £5.99 a month. Only seems to have old films and TV shows on there, most of which I've seen already. Cancelled.
    Spotify - £10 a month. Cancelled.
Car insurance - paid in one go rather than continuing to pay monthly as I had been. Worked out £50 cheaper for the remainder of the year.
Lloyds premier account - £25 a month. Used to pay this because it was cheaper than overdraft fees+interest on a classic account, but never got around to cancelling it until recently even though my overdraft has been really low lately. Had also kept it due to phone insurance and breakdown cover but found much cheaper deals now. Cancelled.
iPad data only SIM - £15 a month to start, £7.50 a month subsequently. Was paying for this for a while even after I got an iPhone and eventually realised that whenever I needed to use my iPad I had wifi, so it was pointless paying for this.
Next one to cancel will probably be Xbox live - £5.99 a month - as I go some months without playing on it.
