I think it will be OK Bone Idle, but not something nice to have to worry about :(

Still doing well with our saving and aiming for that 8.6% by the end of the year! Have cut back on xmas (as I'm currently job hunting).

The bad news is that if I'm lucky enough to get the job I want it is only for 12 months, then have to do all this job hunting again, won't get a mortgage with such a short contract etc. so I'm really feeling sad at the prospect of not buying for at least another 12 months :( booo! At least it means we will hopefully have a nice big deposit :)

:ABeing Thrifty Gifty again this year:A

  • Hi everyone!

Well, I'm fairly new to this saving malarky! £2499 in savings so far and saving for towards a deposit to buy our first house!

Looking at some of the posts on this thread I'd be interested to know how you keep so motivated! A lot of people have saved some serious amounts of money!! There's me aiming for a 10% deposit and you 75% savers have put me to shame!

My boyfriend and I am aiming to save £1400 per month between us. I am also looking to take on a second job to help fund the goal!

How much do you think we should aim at saving/ how long for given the current market? We're looking at houses in the region of £120 as a FTB home

I'll be honest, I'm feeling a wee bit deflated at the prospect of it all as it just seems so far away!

Thanks in advance for any responses

    Sarah xx

Welcome Sarah, thats a good hunk of money you two plan to save a month, you'll do just fine :)

We've saved a fair whack, but plan to buy a non traditional FTB house. I am of the opinion that the ladder is a bit of a hiding to nowhere, I'm not saying there hasn't and won't be gain money to be made from it, but it means your life and the way you live becomes about profitability and choosing fittings others will like, and sacrificing time for actually living in! So, being able to buy omewhere we don't have to move from ha become quite a big incentive! If I were in you situation of ust starting to save now rather than looking at the big goal of house prices if I were feeling deflated I'd prabaly set a savings goal....say £25/30 k. At each 10k mark maybe have a check with OH you are still on board with the idea and that you are celebrating your progress at the shared goal. Everything is so very unstable that trying to fix on a price range etc is a bit like guessing the temperature of water by dipping your toe in...imprecise!

    Welcome, and happy saving. ;)

Argh, bad car week. Thankfully I pulled over before I killed it, but had to be towed to the garage and will only find out tomorrow how many hundreds of pounds that is going to cost :(. Its having a service while in though, maybe fuel consumption will drop a a bit of a bonus!

also, the grass growth is slowing and the horse feed bills are going up for winter now!

I'm not so much bothered about the whole 'making profit' thing... obviously I'm going to be looking for somewhere thats livable from day one that maybe needs a bit of TLC... new bathroom/ new kitchen etc, to add a bit of money on.. but essentially I just want to make a nice home for us to live comfortably.

I just cant wait to see the months roll on and the savings climbing high! Its so exciting!:rotfl:

Hey guys I have to say that although I havent saved anymore than usual this month I am questioning every purchase I am making ie do i need it/ will i use it & at this rate at the end of the month when my next pay packet comes I should have a fair chunk of change to put into the house fund!

I'm also doing a spend diary to see where I can make savings and sadly the daily morning coffee which costs £2 is now a once a week treat on fridays!! but I'm thinking of the savings & trying to keep my focus!!

£2 for coffee?! Excuse me while I almost choke on my FREE cup of tea which I make at work! :p Probably doesn't help I can't stand coffee.

My expenses claim should be paid in the next few days, so that's £500 into the pot.

Going to start up with some serious matched betting this weekend, got some new offers to do so should rake in maybe £150 if I put in the time to find matches, more conservative estimate would be £120.

So things are looking rosey for my target figure by my birthday (end of March want to have £20k - This is purely my own money, I have no OH so it is a tough ask but fingers crossed)
"I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!
