Yes it was rather a stupid question. Do you think the rate would be better from a cashpoint in spain compared to getting it here.?.

Many thanks guys. Hopefully there is a Santander cashpoint near the Holiday village in Benalmadena which i can use.

Beware of dynamic currency conversion - when in Spain do everything in Euro and try to use a real bank ATM (not a service area or dodgy shopping centre one).

Both VISA and Master Card have online maps showing the location of their ATM's - I cannot say how up to date it is and MC links into the local site for the country, so expect to think your way round the foreign language for some currencies.

I've travelled with plastic and not been let down yet - though I had a near miss in Athens on a Friday afternoon in 1973:rotfl::eek:

Is this a joke (after the very helpful advice earlier in your post? I thought it was the late 1980s when it began to be possible to get cash from plastic. I recall the day in 1986 when I was in New York City with no money, and went to a branch of Lloyds Bank there with my cashpoint card. The staff there noted that it looked just like the cards that they issued, and wondered whether the day would ever come when it would work in a machine in another country.

I got cash over the counter using my credit card in New York in 1986. I'm fairly sure I used cashpoints in Spain the same year.

Barclay card and "Euro" cheque over the counter.

In those halcyon days your Barclay card acted as a cheque guarantee card.

Turkey was brilliant, because the Turkish money was rubbish, my cheques took until Christmas to get back to the UK:rotfl:

Which would you rather have a guaranteed sterling cheque or the local toilet paper? The cheques arrived back covered in "previous endorsement guaranteed" stamps, as they passed my uncrossed cheques round as currency.:T
No wonder the banks have put a stop to uncrossed cheque books, bank guarantee cards, and soon cheque books full stop - they don' want the competition from DIY bankers. :D

Mind you what they really wanted was Deutsch Marks - if you wanted a real bargain offer to pay in DM. The local traders could see the GBP was a weakening deficit currency - a bit like now really

The pound looks like it's rallied a bit recently.

Just need it to get back up to the dizzying heights (jest) of a few months ago before i go abroad in September

I'm heading off to France in a couple of weeks, and need to change approx £5500 into euros - cash.

Where will I get the best exchange rate for this amount?

I don't normally worry too much over a couple of cents in the pound, but when it's so much money, it could make a significant difference!

Need cash as it's not all mine..... it's holiday spending money saved up for a bunch of us, so I need to divvy it up again once exchanged!

Who do you bank with? I depending on their loading fees and exchange charges if any, i always find it cheaper to withdraw cash from a foreign ATM. You'll struggle getting £5500 in one go mind.

Check out the tools on this site. I suspect that the most convenient solution will be an on-line and postal service such as International Currency Exchange.
