I think I might have mentioned this before so apologies if I have. What I can't understand is that when we have positive/negative data from the UK it has an upward or downward effect on the Euro/Sterling rate. But yet when the Eurozone has negative news data out it has little effect on the strength of Sterling.

quite maddening isn't it !!

  • It is maddening!! I have left it to the last minute to buy my Euro's as the rates have just been terrible. We go away tomorrow and still havn't got them. I have been quoted 1.132 Euro's from Thomas Cook today. They havn't had their daily figures yet and the good news is, they have reserved the currency for us at 1.132 but if the figures come in with a better rate later, they will let us have the better rate :) It's worth ringing round and bartering. We found this last year when two companies Bath Travel and Thomas cook both said they would compete for the best rate. We ended up with a cracking deal from Bath Travel in the end, after Thomas Cook gave in when they could no longer beat Bath Travel and we ended up with a rate that compared to Thomas Cook travel exchange. Kerching!! Hoping to push 700 Euro's for £600 today if we are lucky. That will be an extra 20 Euro's. Every little helps!! :D

I expect to get flamed for this but here goes.....

I like to get the best rate when converting currency as the next person, but for the sake of very minor fluctuations which may amount to £50 or so over the course of a holiday spend I am simply not prepared to ring round, constantly check rates etc. My time is valuable too.

What we do is get a nominal amount out to last us a day or so, and then use a Nationwide debit card to withdraw at the ATM, Nationwide have always converted at well above the going high street rate, and no messing about tracking rates. I just cant see the fascination or point of tracking every minor fluctuation and holding off, or rushing down and buying. Maybe it is just me!!

...you won't get flamed, you just have a different view on things. On a self catering holiday £50 can be a day of food for a family. I realise that time is money too, and if you have different priorities that's fine.

If I have spent time researching all the best deals for the rest of my holiday then I just want my currency to be the best rate too.

Depends what you're doing though. I need to get a cheque drawn up for about 2200 euro for holiday accommodation and it can make a difference for that. i have a lot of leeway for when I actually get it drawn so I'm trying to keep an eye for the best time. I would probably also withdraw a couple of hundred euros ahead of time for spending if the rate was good. But would still do most of my cash withdrawing out there.

I spend a lot of time researching the best holiday deal, but therein lie big savings. By booking via a US travel agent for a cruise next year I saved £650.and I can cancel any time up to final payment without penalty. £50 was a nominal figure and probably way more than the fluctuations would actually amount to. It just seems a lot of effort for very little reward to me, but each to their own.
